BOP configuration

Rated Working Pressure

API RP 53 gives the following definition of
Rated Working Pressure (RWP):
The maximum internal pressure that
equipment is designed to contain or control.
The required working pressure of the BOP stack for a
particular well is based on the maximum anticipated
surface pressure.
This is determined from the maximum anticipated
formation pressure, less the hydrostatic pressure of a
column of gas back to surface.
Rated Working Pressure
API documentation uses codes for designation
of BOP stack arrangements.
G = rotating head
A = annular type BOP
R = single ram type BOP
Rd = double ram type BOP
Rt = triple ram type BOP
S = drilling spool with side outlet
connections for choke and kill lines.
BOP stack
A BOP stack may be
fully identified by a
very simple
Ram designation, such as:
10k-135/8-SRRA
Ram

This BOP stack would

have a RWP of 10,000
psi, a throughbore of
135/8 inches and
