Flood Lighting
 Determine the effect desired.
 Determine the location of the floodlights.
 Determine the desired level of illumination.
 Select the proper type of equipment.
 Determine the required number and the
lamp wattage of the floodlights.
Check the uniformity and coverage of
lighting.
Criteria's to consider:
Each surface should have such a brightness that it appears in
proper perspective when viewed from afar.
Shadows cast should look like those cast by the sun. They should
not destroy the basic form and depth of a building's architecture.
Walls and other flat surfaces should be illuminated to a level that
will reveal their texture and character.
Floodlighting equipment should be inconspicuously
located and should not introduce glare in the field of
view of persons normally observing the building.
Illumination level.
Column floodlighting .
Offset construction floodlighting.
Floodlighting Monuments and Statues
Projector
Light form the lamp into relatively narrow beam
Reflecting surface-silvered glass, stainless steel or
chromium plates
Beam spread: amount of divergence of the beam
Beam spread angle defined as angle within which the
min illumination on a surface normal to the axis of
the beam is 1/10th of the max
Types
degree distance
Narrow beam – 12 to 25 above 70m
Medium angle- 25 to 40 30m to 70 m
Wide angle - 40 to 90 3m to 30 m
Long range installation, the projectors are mounted
on the adjacent building or at ground level about 15 to
30m away from the building illuminated. Parallel
beam is used. Parabolic reflector is used.
Short range installation the projectors located near
the building to be illuminated. Asymmetric reflector.
The front of a building 35 × 18 m is illuminated by 15
lamps; the wattage of each lamp is 80 W. The lamps are
arranged so that uniform illumination on the surface is
obtained. Assuming a luminous efficiency of 20
lumens/W, the coefficient of utilization is 0.8, the waste
light factor is 1.25, DF = 0.9. Determine the illumination
on the surface.
Area = (A) = 35 × 18 = 630 m2.
The number of lamps, N = 15.
Luminous efficiency, η = 20 lumens/W.
UF = 0.8, DF = 0.9.
Waste light factor = 1.25, E = ?
It is required to flood light the front of a building 30m x20m
to give brightness of 20 lumen/m2 . Coefficient of reflection of
building surface is 0.2. lamps of 500w having lumen output of
8450 each are used. Take beam factor as 0.6, waste light factor
as 1.2, and M.F 0.8. Calculate the number of lamps required.
 illumination=brightness in lumen/m2 / Coefficient of
=20/0.2 = 100 lux reflection factor
lumen output of projector = 0.6 x N x 8450
lumen required on the surface = 30 x 20 x 100 x 1.2 / 0.8
lumen output of projector = lumen required on the surface
N=18
