of academic disciplines
dedicated to examining
society. This branch of science
studies how people interact with
each other, behave, develop as a
culture, and influence the world.

Activity 1: In a separate sheet,

the following:

1. Facebook 4. Twitter
2. Gmail 5. YouTube
3. Messenger
Activity 2: Simply write on the column
the respective functions of the social
media platforms and when to use
them.
Information technology has provided us
a very accessible means of
communication - social media. We can
instantly connect to anyone across the
globe just with the use of our cell phones,
laptops, or tablets through the social
media sites.
Media

Communication that is mediated or

transmitted through channels such as
television, film, radio, social networking sites,
fax, e-mail, cell phone, overnight couriers,
messengers, and print is generally referred to
as media (Alberts, Nakayama, and Martin
2007). All non-face-to-face communications
go through channels.
Mass Media

All forms of communication that are devoted

to transmitting standardized messages to
widespread audience are called mass media
(Thomson and Hecky 1999). These include
newspapers, magazines, books, e-books,
radio, social networking sites, and the
Internet, television, and motion pictures.
Mass Media

Generally, communication involves the

giving, receiving or exchanging
information, opinions, or ideas. It is
essentially a two-way process,
comprising the elements of the sender,
message, channel, receiver, feedback,
and context. Mass media does not
consist much of these.
Social Media

Social media is communication through

websites and other online platforms (e.g.,
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and
LinkedIn) that are used by large groups
of people to share information, develop
social and professional contacts, and
promote business
New and social media

Under new and social media,

communication is not necessarily
relational but issue and interest-based
instead. With the help of technology, new
media has helped transform the notion
of a community based on geography to a
community based on interest, from
citizens to netizens.
People forge a conversational community
driven by the common interest and
generally focused on a single issue and are
virtually located. This can be done online
and in real time using instant messaging.
Unlike a carefully researched response, in
this communication, people are more
concerned with expressing their opinions
and feelings about the issue at hand.

Who Says What in Which Channel to Whom With
What Effect?

Emphasis on communication as a human as well as a

technical process was taken a stage further by Laswell
(1948), who produced a model oriented to the development
of a broader understanding of the role of mass media in
society.

Laswell’s approach suggests each of the factors he

identifies have equally important implications for the
outcome of the communication process. Therefore, it is
important for one to answer each of these factors for an
ethical and effective communication.
Who Says What in Which Channel to Whom With
What Effect?
Analysis

Take for example the Who? in the diagram. A student texting

a classmate about an assignment will definitely have a
different tone in texting the same message to the class
adviser. Consider also that the medium to be used in sending
the message will be reconsidered considering that the receiver
is the class adviser. It might just be okay for you to ask your
classmate through the fb conversations, yet you would
consider more using the messenger when communicating
with your adviser the same concern. Consider also that
messaging in all caps can make much difference on the effect
of your message.
This means that taking into account
the questions in Laswell’s model helps
one to communicate in a more
humane way. Thus, Laswell’s idea
helps us to distinguish the
appropriate communication media
channel(s) to use in different settings
and situations.
Activity 3:
Doodle art is a fun and
effective way to
communicate a personal
message on various issues.
In a one short bond paper,
make a doodle art of your
message to people about
what we are experiencing
because of the pandemic.
Remember the simple rule-
