Why do typhoons

occur frequently
in the
Philippines?
Our country is an
archipelago surrounded by
the (1) Philippine Sea (east),
(2) Luzon strait (north), (3)
West Philippine Sea (west)
and (4) Sulu Sea & Celebes
Sea (south)
Cyclogenesis
is the process by which
a cyclone develops and
strengthens.
Cyclone
is a spinning wind around a
low pressure area (LPA)
which has relatively low
barometric pressure
reading.
Hurricanes
are tropical cyclones
that form in the
Atlantic Ocean.
Tropical Depression
If the speed of the
maximum sustained winds
near the center or eye of the
cyclone is 30-60 km/hr and
expected within 36 hours.
Tropical Storm
If the speed is 60-100
km/hr and expected within
24 hours
Typhoon
If the speed is 100-185
km/hr and expected within
18 hours
Super Typhoon
If the speed of the
maximum sustained winds
near the center or eye of the
cyclone is 185 km/hr and
above and expected within
12 hours.
PROCESS INVOLVED IN THE
FORMATION OF TYPHOON

Water evaporates from

warm ocean water
Intense Low Pressure
Area forms over ocean
surface. Tropical
Depression is formed.
Low Pressure Area draws
in air from surrounding
HPA.

Wind develops as air

moves from HPA to LPA.

How landforms and
bodies of water
affects
TYPHOONS?
 As a typhoon moves
from water into land,
it tends to weaken
because of the
decrease warm water
supply.
 Strong wind shear
usually associated
with mountains can
also rip a cyclone
apart.
 Bodies of water tend to
strengthen cyclones –
the longer a cyclone
stays over water, the
stronger & more
devastating it becomes.
What are the
“ingredients” for a
typhoon to
develop?
Supply of wind
Water

PHILIPPINE AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY

"100-plus dead, lying in the streets, with 100 plus injured…this report was relayed to us by
our station manager so it is considered very reliable information," pahayag ni Civil Aviation
Authority of the Philippines deputy director general John Andrews sa isang panayam sa
telebisyon.

"According to the station manager, the airport is completely ruined,” dagdag pa nito, matapos
