An electric car can be purchased for a reasonable
price, is simple to operate, and is fantastic to own
thanks to Better Place, a global firm that provides EV
networks and services. They offer services to make EV
adoption and use more secure. To maximize access to
and usage of energy, they construct and run the
necessary systems and infrastructure. To make an
appealing and integrated solution possible, they
collaborate with ecosystem players.
CHALLENGE:
What’s the fastest way to bring the electric “filling
station” — a technology of the future — to market?
KEY MOVES
ESTABLISHMENT
Better Place was established in 2007 by Shai Agassi
with three simple tenets in mind: oil is limited, oil
costs will definitely increase, and the need to cut
carbon emissions is being driven by global warming.
As long as they have refueling stations, electric
vehicles will contribute to the solution to reducing
pollution.
CREATION
Even so, there was, at least in most markets,
a significant gap between that
understanding and the kind of supportive
policies required to generate a critical mass
of electric vehicles.

ANALYSIS
Therefore, Better Place made the decision to
research which regions had already made
political and cultural progress in favor of electric
vehicles, in effect "outsourcing" its work on
changing regulatory policy to localities where it
was already happening.
 KEY MOVES
BETTER PLACE

The public's willingness to purchase electric vehicles, which creates a market, and the political environment
being created by the government are among the Better Place's requirements for determining whether areas are
suitable for operation. Israel, whose goal is for all new automobiles to be electric by 2020, was at the top of the
list of countries. Urban centers in Israel are also less than 150 kilometers apart (about 90 miles), and 90% of car
owners drive less than 70 kilometers per day, making them perfect for short-haul electric vehicles. And so, with
gasoline taxes and a burgeoning wind industry, Israel appeared to be the perfect habitat to nurture electric
vehicles—and thus electric refilling stations.

Denmark, which has a robust green consumer movement and has promised to reduce carbon emissions by 21%
by 2012, came in second. Additionally, Better Place collaborated with the city of Copenhagen to quickly build
electric charging stations. The company is seeking to roll out recharge stations in Australia, the United States
(Los Angeles), and Japan, in addition to these two technologically advanced nations.
LOCATIONS
 IMPACT:
Better Place is gaining a competitive edge in the
removal of a significant obstacle to the widespread
use of electric cars by identifying advantageous
places. With proof of concept in place in forward-
thinking countries, it has also positioned itself to be
among the first to benefit when battery pack
recharging infrastructure and services become more
widely adopted.
