What is a NOUN PHRASE?

• A noun phrase (NP) is a phrase that has a noun or pronoun as its head or performs the same
grammatical function as a noun.

• It can be made up of single noun called HEAD (optionally accompanied by


determiner/modifier)
Example:

Noun phrase can act as SUBJECT, OBJECT OR COMPLEMENT

The police inspected the riders on the road.

• Prepositional phrase

MODIFIERS

• adjective clause:
- The annoying dog that keeps barking belongs to the neighbors
down the street.
• Participial phrase:
- The girl drinking coffee at the café is my student.
• Infinitive:
- Danna is looking for a book to read, I suggest those of Paolo Coelho.
