What is indicator?
Acids Acids are substance that have a pH below 7 and turn
universal indicator yellow, orange or red.

Properties of acids:

● Corrosive
● Have a sour taste
● Turn blue litmus paper red
● Conduct electricity

Laboratory Acids
What is strong acid? Some acids, like those found in laboratory or car
batteries are very dangerous! ( too dangerous to taste
or touch )

These acids are said to be corrosive as they can

damage other materials by eating them away! They
are strong acids

Strong acids dissolve completely in solution.

Their pH is in between 1-3.

What is weak acid Many acids are found in household items such as
food, drinks and skincare.

These acids dissolve partially (do not dissolve

completely) in solution and are known as weak acids

Their pH is in between 4-6

When you are using acids, please wear safety glasses
Alkalis Alkalis are another group of chemicals, the opposite
of acids.

Properties of alkalis:

● Caustic 腐蚀性的
● Soapy, slimy feel
● Bitter taste
● Conduct electricity
● Turn red litmus paper blue
Everyday alkalis
Laboratory alkalis
What is strong alkalis? Some alkalis, like those in the laboratory dissolve
completely in solution and are too dangerous to
touch.

They dissolve completely in solution.

These alkalis are said to be caustic because they can

burn your skin and damage other materials!

Strong alkalis has a pH in between 12 - 14

What is weak alkalis? Alkalis are found in soap and other materials used for
cleaning. It is safe to handle these alkalis, which can
feel soapy.

These alkalis dissolve partially ( do not dissolve

completely ) in solution and are known as weak
alkalis.

Their pH is in between 8 - 11
What is an indicator? You can a liquid to find it is an acid or alkalis.

An indicator is a special chemical that changes to a

different colours in an acid and alkali.

Litmus solution and litmus paper are example of

indicators.
