ACIDS & BASES

WHAT ARE ACIDS?

ACIDS
An acid is any hydrogen-containing substance that can
donate a proton (hydrogen ion) to another substance.

Properties of Acids
• It has sour taste.
• It reacts with some metals and produce hydrogen gas.
• It reacts to base to form salt
• It changes a blue litmus paper to red.

WHAT ARE BASES?
Are molecules, chemicals or ions,
able to accept a hydrogen ion
from an acid.

BASES Properties of Bases

• It has bitter taste.
• It is slippery and smooth
• It reacts with acid to form salt
• It changes a red litmus paper into blue.

THE PH SCALE

The acidity and basicity of a chemical

can be described by using pH value-the A pH lower than 7 indicates acidity
negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion A pH of 7 indicates a neutral and a pH above 7 indicates
concentration. solution basicity.
PROPER HANDLING OF ACIDS AND BASES

Strong acids and bases are corrosive and cause a burning sensation to the skin, so, be
careful in handling these materials all the time. Here are some ways to handle the properly:

• Buy small quantities of acids and bases to prevent ineffectiveness and difficulties in
storage.
• Buy diluted and acids and bases for easier storage and usage.
• Read the safety notices on the products.
• Wear protective gear (goggles, long-sleeved clothes, and gloves) when using acids and
bases. Do not allow acids or bases to come in contact with skin or eyes.
• Limit the amount of acids and bases transported for usage around the house.
• Cap the bottles of acid and base cleaners tightly.
