Length of Intercepts Made on Axes by the Tangent

Equation of tangent at any point (x1, y1) to the curve y = f(x) is

y – y1 = (x–x1) ....(1)
Put x = 0, we get,x – intercept = OA = x1 –
Put y = 0, we get y–intercept OB = y1 – x1

The Concept of Repeated Root

If f(x) be differentiable and x = a be n times repeated roots of the equation

f (x) = 0 , then it will be (n – 1) times repeated roots of the equation f’(x) = 0

Let f(x) = (x – a )n g(x)

f’(x) = n(x – a )n – 1 g(x) + (x – a )n g’(x)
f’(x) = (x – a )n – 1 [ g(x) + (x – a ) g’(x)
Q. If the equation mx3 – 9x2 + 12x – 5 = 0 has two equal roots , then find
the sum of all possible values of [m] ( where [m] represents the G.I.F)
Angle of Intersection of two curves

If two curves y = f1 (x) and y = f2 (x) intersect at a point P, then the angle
between their tangents at P is defined as the angle between these two curves
at P.
so at P their angle of intersection f is given by
tan f = ±
The other angle of intersection will be (180º– f)
Note :
 If two curves intersect orthogonally i.e. at right angle then f = so the
condition will be .= – 1

curves, y=10−x2 and y=2+x2 at a point of their intersection, then find
value of ∣tanθ∣ .
