The Physical Changes in Matter

An object undergoes physical change when only its size, shape, weight, and
texture changes. Physical change does not change the identify of an object.

Different ways to change the physical properties of matter without changing its
identity.
1. Cutting or tearing a piece of cloth or paper will change both the size and shape
of the object.
2. Grinding wheat into flour changes the appearance and texture of
the grains into a finer form.

3. Breaking a glass container changes the size

and shape of the object.
4. Pounding ocean waves break rocks into smaller pieces over time.

5. Stretching a rubber band does

not change the identity of the rubber band
before and after stretching.
Only its shape and size change.
Phase change-matter can change from one state to
another. This happens when temperature changes. Solid
can change into liquid, liquid can change into gas, and
gas can change into liquid.
Different Types of Phase Change
Freezing-a phase transition where a liquid turns into a
solid when its temperature is lowered below its freezing
point.

Melting- change from solid to liquid

Evaporation- change from liquid to gaseous form.
Condensation-change from gas to liquid form.
Sublimation- change from solid to gas.
