system and explain their
purposes.
The Heart
• Feel the rhythmic beat of your
heart? How many beats can you
count per minute? Without the
heart, our blood couldn't
flow, meaning that our
cells wouldn't receive the
oxygen and nutrients they need to
survive.

• The heart is the driving force of

the entire circulatory system!
The Heart
• The heart is a muscle that acts as a
pump
• It is approximately the size of your
fist and is located slightly to the left of
the centre of your chest.

The Heart
The heart consists of four chambers, and
all of them have blood vessels attached.
The top two chambers of the heart are the
atria (singular: atrium), while the bottom two
chambers are the ventricles. The two atria have thin
walls, while the ventricles have thick, muscular
walls.
The left atrium and the right atrium are separated by a
wall called the atrial septum. We also have a left and
a right ventricle separated
by the ventricular septum, which is as thick and
muscular as the ventricles themselves.
Parts of Human Heart
 4 chambers

•  2 atria (thin wall)

•  2 Ventricles (thick wall)

 Vessels

•  Artery ( carry oxygenated blood except Pulmonary

artery)
•  Veins (carry deoxygenated blood except
Pulmonary vein)

Valves – Prevent backflow of blood

The Valves

• Each atrium is separated

from its ventricle by a
valve. They close as the
ventricle contracts to
prevent blood flowing
backwards.

Watch-Write-Do

Watch the video on the pathway of

blood flow through the heart.
Transform the information gained
from the video into a simple flow
chart to represent the movement of
blood through the heart.
Let's see what one whole loop looks like.
The chart below  shows a simple representation of the pathway of
blood flow.
