1 INTRODUCTION
Jzel Ann B.

Communication is a process by which

information is exchanged between or among
individuals through a common system of
symbols, signs and behavior. It is all about
spreading understanding so that people can
connect and work or live better together.
In Communication, there is a communication breakdown and success.

What is Communication breakdown?

Jzel Ann B.
Communication breakdown means a failure to exchange information,
resulting in a lack of communication.

Example:
If someone is talking while they are chewing gum or eating food, it might
be hard to understand what they are doing.

What is communication success?

Communication success is a distribution of messages clearly and

concisely, in a way that connects with the audience which makes them
understand correctly.

• To express feelings ( Affective Communication)
• To imagine ( Imaginative Communication)
• To influence ( Persuasive Communication)
• To meet social expectations ( Ritualistic Communication)
3 DISCUSSION
Affective Communication (to express)
Jzel Ann B.
- Is the process through which people express feelings about things, themselves and others
- Is communicating with someone either with or about affect ( the influence of feelings or
emotions.

We communicate through affective channels naturally everyday. Indeed, most of us are

experts in expressing, recognizing and dealing with emotions.

For Example:
A crying child, and a parent comforting that child .
An angry costumer complaining to a costumer service representative, and that
representative trying to clear up the problem are both also engaged in affective
communication.
Jzel Ann B.

 How this purpose affects communication breakdown/

success?

 How the/se breakdown/success influence the way we

treat/value the people in the communication process?
• Using inappropriate words
When you are ranting about things or you gave your opinion that you are in the
Jzel Ann B. point where you used improper words towards the audience. So by using
inappropriate words the person you are talking to would get offended by the swears
and that would cause the listener to be uncomfortable.
• Lack of attention to tone
Tone is the music of communication. Tone tells the listeners how you want this
exchange to feel - playful or urgent or grave. When you start speaking, most people
aren’t listening to what you are saying; they are listening to your tone and figuring out
what it means.
• Emotions
Emotional state at a particular point of time also affects communication. If the
receiver feels that communicator is angry he interprets that the information being sent
is very bad. While he takes it differently if the communicator is happy and jovial (in that
case the message is interpreted to be good and interesting).
