Multiple Linear Regression Analysis
• well known statistical technique for fitting mathematical relationships between dependent
and independent variables.
• in the case of trip generation equations,
• dependent variable = the number of trips
• independent variables = the various measurable factors that influence trip generation

+ +……+ +
= number of trips generated for purpose p
,= independent variables
,= dependent variables
= Disturbance term

Above equation is developed from the present day data using the statistical technique of
“least squares” fitting.
It is used for the determining the future values of trips

Multiple Linear Regression Analysis
• Assumptions:
1. Each of the independent variables is linearly related to the dependent variable.
2. All the independent variables are independent of each other.
3. All the variables are normally distributed.
4. All the variables are continuous.
5. The influence of each independent variable is additive
• Limitations of regression analysis:
1. Assumption of linear relationship.
2. Survey errors, biases
3. Prediction of future values of independent variables.
4. Correlation between independent variables.
5. The values of the regression coefficients may not remain stable over time.

Category Analysis
• It is also called Cross Classification Technique.
• Considered the Household as the fundamental unit of trip making
• Number of trips from household is a stable function of 3 parameters;
1. Household income
2. Car ownership
3. Family structure
• Assumptions:
1. Household is the fundamental unit in the trip generation process
2. Trip generated by household depends upon various characteristics
3. Households of different sets of characteristics produce trips at different rates.
4. Only three factors are of prime importance in affecting the number of trips
5. Trip generation rates in a horizon year will be the same
