COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS &

BOPET VS
MOPET
DIFFERENCES
ORIENTED FILMS

• Solid state orientation process creates very significant changes in film properties that can
be quite valuable in packaging structures.
• These changes permit films which are lighter and thinner than standard blown or cast
films to satisfy varied performance requirements.
• This is possible due to significant changes/increase in properties such as tensile strength,
toughness, heat stability, tear initiation resistance, barrier etc.
SOLID PHASE ORIENTATION : POPULAR CHOICES

• Monoaxial orientation – Orientation in a single direction viz. *Machine direction or **Transverse direction.

• Biaxial orientation – Orientation (sequential or simultaneous) in both *Machine direction and **Transverse
direction.

*Machine Direction – across the length

**Transverse Direction – Across width
• Biaxial orientation (Both MD & TD) is the most prevalent
film orientation process. Most of the BOPP or BOPET
films used in packaging industry are produced using this
process.

BIAXIALLY • Manufacturers now are installing lines which are upto

10.4 metres wide, for production of BOPET and BOPP
ORIENTED films, bringing down production costs/unit and creating
FILMS (BOPET plentiful supplies.
& BOPP) • One of the highest selling product in BOPET is the 12 mic
PET film and for a BOPP is 25 mic Heat sealable film.
• As an example in terms of the standard film properties, for
a 12 micron BOPET film, shrinkage in MD is <3 and TD
is <1.
• Creating deliberate unbalanced properties in MD and TD can
provide valuable and unique performance advantages tailored to
specific applications. Solid phase orientation performed solely in
MD is called MDO and in the TD is called TDO.
MONOAXIALLY • Shrink sleeve label films is one of the most common example of
ORIENTED a specialty polyester film made using this type of process. Shrink
FILMS (MOPET sleeve films can be both MDO shrink film or TDO shrink films.

OR MOPP) • Monoaxially oriented products are made commonly on 3.5metre

to 6.5 metre wide production lines, as per the prevailing
technological standards. Due to the limitations and specialized
nature of product, the number of suppliers and total supply has
remained much smaller as compared to BOPET films.
• Monoaxially oriented PET-G shrink films are meant for
sleeve labels used in industries such as FMCG, Pharma,
Cosmetics etc.
• These films are unique in characteristics such as TD
PET-G SHRINK shrinkage of around 75-78%, presence of modified glycol
FILMS FOR in the core formula of PET, thickness ranging from 38-70
SLEEVE micron, heat shrinkable property and density < standard
BOPET films (around 1.32 instead of 1.40 gm/cc).
LABELS
• Even in terms of supply volumes, MOPET films such as
PET-G shrink films only constitute a very small fraction of
the BOPET film supplies crowding the markets of the
world and creating challenges of local manufacturers.
