LEVELS OF COMMUNICATION
 Communication is a universal and multi-
dimensional activity.
 There are many levels at which people or

organizations can communicate.

EXTRA PERSONAL COMMUNICATION
 Communicationbetween human beings
and non-human entities.
For example animals
EXTRA PERSONAL COMMUNICATION
 For Eg:- When your pet comes to you
wagging its tail as soon as you return
home from work, a parrot responding to
your greeting is another example of extra
personal communication.
EXTRA PERSONAL COMMUNICATION
 More than any other form, this form
requires perfect co-ordination and
understanding between the sender and
the receiver.

or responds in sign language.
INTRA-PERSONAL COMMUNICATION
 Intra Personal communication implies
communication within the self or inside of
oneself.
 This kind of communication pertains to

thinking, which is the basis of information


processing.

The individual becomes his or her own
sender and receiver through an ongoing
process in his mind.

 Without such internal dialogue, you
cannot proceed to the further levels of
communication-interpersonal and
organizational.

 Infact while we are communicating with
the other party, internal dialogue with
oneself continues concurrently
(simultaneoulsy).

consciously resolve to complete a certain

like take place at intra-personal level.


INTER PERSONAL COMMUNICATION
 Exchange
of information between one
to one is called “ inter-personal
communication”.

 The basic characteristic feature of


inter-personal communication is oral
and face to face communication.

 InInter-personal communication there are
a few participants involved, the
interactants are in close physical proximity
to each other and there is a quick
feedback.

clarified.

and confidence play an important
role in interpersonal aspects of
communication.

 There would always be ineffective


communication, if the sub-ordinates do
not trust the boss or manager.

message in this form of communication
due to the proximity of the people
involved.

outside the organization is called
external-operational communication.

 It takes place between one
organization and other organizations,
communication with governmental
agencies, authorities, communication
with customers or public in general.

personal communication.

a mediator to transmit information.

audience that is heterogeneous (varied,
diverse) and anonymous, the approach is
impersonal.

a large firm, advertisement for a particular
product or service take place through
mass media.
 It is generally persuasive in style and

requires utmost care on the part of the


sender in encoding the message.

PRESENCE OF A GATE-KEEPER
 Mass communication needs additional
persons to convey the message from
sender to receiver.
 This gatekeeper or mediator could be a

person active in transferring or sending


information from the source to the target
audience.
PRESENCE OF A GATE-KEEPER
 For example in a newspaper the
editor makes choices and decides
which news makes it to the hands of
the reader.
 The editor is therefore the gatekeeper

in the mass communication process.
