CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This study will focus on rice and tapioca as main source/materials in making edible straws as replacement to
plastic straws which are commonly used by Restaurants and Coffee Shops in Lipa City. Once edible straw is
developed, it can replace the plastic straw and the value of the usual straw will increase.

Such a feature is particularly problematic given the fact that plastic straws are utilized only for short
duration and are ill-suited for reuse. New alternatives to plastic straws are being considered due to consumer
demands for sustainability and recent changes in government policies and regulations, such as bans on single-use
plastic products. Edible straws are diversified straws with flexible, lightweight, translucent, easily shaped, impact
resistant, safe to eat characteristics.
BRIEF BACKGROUND OF THE
STUDY
Among the trash that harms marine life are straws. Almost 800 different animal
species are negatively impacted by plastics. The government's efforts to ban the use of
plastic straws in the marketplace reduce consumer convenience regarding their
beverages. The easiest way to address both issues is to create a product that is
structurally identical to a drinking tube but radically different from one because the
innovative product is made of rice and it is edible.

Nature's unbending law is: "Adapt or perish" (H. G. Wells, 2001). The researchers' idea
to create edible rice straws that can withstand use of plastic straws was inspired by this.
People can make the changes necessary to maintain humanity's survival while also
benefiting the environment .
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

• To determine whether rice-based edible straws are marketable in Lipa City, Batangas;

• To determine the technological viability of creating edible rice straws while considering the most

appropriate equipment, direct labor, production capacity, and ideal site for the proposed study;

• To create management entity rules and regulations and choose the best company organizational

structure based on the regulations that must be followed for the business to run;

• To determine whether it is economically feasible to manufacture rice-based edible straws;

• To determine how manufacturing edible straws can advance the local economy and community; and

• To establish a brand as the first producer of edible rice straws in Lipa City, Batangas.
SCOPE & LIMI-
TATIONS OF THE
STUDY
Feasibility studies include ;
• Market aspect
• Technical aspect
• Administrative aspect
• Financial and socio-economic aspects of the
project.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The proponents’ product is named “DriEat’s Straw”. A drinking tube
comprised of rice flour, tapioca powder, and water is known as an edi-
ble drinking tube or edible straw. It comes in a variety of sizes and
flavors without any chemical preservatives. The sizes range from standard
to XL. The XL size is for beverages with toppings like pearl, nata, sprin-
kle, and marshmallow among others, while the standard size is for bever-
ages without toppings. It is a product that is safe to consume and can
withstand both hot and cold liquid.
USES OF PRODUCT
Consumers have the option of eating edible straws in addition to
using them to sip beverages. It would no longer be a difficulty to
dispose of the straw if the customers choose not to eat it. In addition
to being edible to humans, it can also be consumed by other living
thing, particularly marine species, who are particularly harmed by the
pollution of seas and oceans with plastic. The usage of plastic
and any subsequent pollution will be reduced by using these edible
straws.
