QFD is a system for designing a product or service based on customer
demands which involves all suplier organization. It is also reffered as Total
quality control. The requirements of customers are translated into specific
technical requiremenets.

The system study helps in –
Understanding customer needs.
Improved organization on development projects & productions.
Improving the efficiency of manufacturing process.
Increasing productivity
Computer Mouse
A computer mouse is a hand-held pointing device that detects two-
dimensional motion relative to a surface. This motion is typically translated
into the motion of a pointer on a display, which allows a smooth control of
the graphical user interface of a computer

Customer Requirements

Weight and size – weight of the product is one of the most important customer requirement.
Most of the customers prefers a light weight and a compact design.
Low cost – Product should be both efficient and affordable which would attract the customers
Durability – The durability determines quality of the product.
Aesthetics – First impression of the product is often visual, making aesthetics very important.
Water Resistant – The product is designed to not be easily harmed on effected by water or to
not allow water to pass through easily.
Color – The visual appeal of an item is the major influence of the consumers buying decision .

Competitive Evaluation
Analysing the Matrix and finalizing the product development strategy
and product plans.

In Quality function deployment of a product, we consider both the customer requirements and technical descriptors of
that product and determine its inter relationship matrix, its co-relation matrix and also find the competitive evaluation.
Here we have the computer mouse for the quality function deployment and then we analyse its various matrices using
the house of quality.
At first the customer requirements of a computer mouse is analysed. Then the technical descriptors of a computer mouse
is analysed. The next step is finding the inter relationship between the customer requirements and the technical
descriptors using the house of quality.
Analysis of Inter-relationship matrix
The inter-relationship matrix between these two are denoted using some signs,
key   Interpretation   Weight

Θ - Strong relationship = 9

Ο - Medium relationship = 3

▲ - Weak relationship = 1

The inter-relationship between the customer requirements and the technical descriptors is shown below
From the above figure we can determine the relationship between the customer requirements and technical descriptors.
 Here the Dimensions of a computer mouse have a strong relationship with Weight and Size, Durability and Asthetics from
the customer requirement.
 Purchasing price have a strong relationship with Low cost, Durability and water resistant.
 Battery capacity of a mouse is dependent on low cost and water resistant.
 Raw material have a strong relationship with weight and size, low cost, durability, and water resistant.
 Also Battery capacity have a moderate relationship with weight and size.
 The manufacturing processes of a mouse is dependent on weight and size, low cost, durability and water resistant.
 An empty row in the figure indicates that a customer voice is not addressed by any technical descriptors.
This is how we determine the inter-relation ship matrix between customer requirements and technical descriptors.
Analysis of Roof matrix
The analysis of roof matrix allows the user to identify which technical characteristics support one another and which are
conflicting. Conflicting technical descriptors are extremely important because they are frequently the result of conflicting
customer requirements and, consequently, represent points at which tradeoffs must be made.
The symbols used for roof matrix or co-relation matrix are as follows;

┼┼ - Strong positive correlation

┼ - positive correlation

▬ - Negative Correlation

▼ - Strong Negative Correlation

The co-relation matrix is determined between the technical descriptors itself to identify which characterisics are conflicting.
• Here the Battery capacity of the mouse has a storng co-relation with the weight and size of a mouse because as the battery
capacity increases the weight and size of the mouse increase slightly.
• On the other hand the purchasing price increases if increase the dimensions of a mouse.
The co-relation matrix of the technical descriptors is shown below

Roof matrix analysis

The above diagram is the roof matrix analysis which determines the co-relation matrix between the technical descriptors.
Competitive Analysis
Competitive analysis helps to find the strengths and constraints in all aspects of a product and in comparison, with its main
competitors. Also it determines whether to improve its competitiveness in the market.
• Here the competitive analysis is done by comparing our company with its competitor considering the customer needs.
• The Figure below shows the strength of our company by comparing with the competitors.
• The Figure also shows where the company should improve its competitiveness in the market and mainly to satisfy the customer
needs.
CONCLUSION OF ANALYSIS OF MATRIX
After analysing the various matrices using house of quality, we get a brief idea on how to design a product
by considering various factors such as customer needs, technical descriptors and also the competitors in
the present market.
• It also determines where and what to improve in the product to improve its competitiveness.
• Also determines how to increase the productivity than earlier.
• So our company must manufacture a computer mouse which satisfies the customer needs such as
weight and size, dimensions, aesthetics, water resistant at an affordable cost, to be competitive in the
present market.
REQUIRED ACTION AND AREA OF FOCUS

The competitive analysis shows the strength of the company as well as the area of improvement. It gives an idea about the
area to be focused mainly to increase the quality of our product which gives the strength to our company to be competitive in
the present market. It also identifies the required actions to be taken in order to improve the quality of the product .

In order to manufacture a computer mouse by satisfying the customer demands and the present market, we have to select
good quality raw material(Plastic) which must have light weight to meet the expectations of the customers to have a compact
size an
d more durable mouse to hold. To meet the results we have to calculate the best possible dimensions including the length
and width of mouse by making a sketch. After that there must be a smooth manufacturing process because it will determine
the actual outcome.
To make a planned size mouse according to the market demands there must be some things to focus like it must be with good
aesthetics so that it will be more attractive for the consumers. Majority of the consumers in the world select a product mainly
by considering the aesthetics of the product. So a mouse with a good design or aesthetic is what most of the customers
prefer. Also, the lightening effect will pay another role, in addition providing a good range in comparatively less price will be
the best approach to achieve the target. Any customer who wants a product, they look at the price at first. Then they
compare the product with other competitor. If we are able to develop a product by considering these factors in an affordable
price, then this will be the best approach to achieve the target.
Finalized Target values
• The mouse is made compact, so the dimensions of the mouse is reduced to :
Length= 11 cm, Breadth= 5 cm, Height= 3 cm
• Customers love the product when it is affordable and efficient. Even though more features are added to the product, purchasing
price is kept as low as 60 PLN without compromising the quality.
• Battery capacity of a mouse is directly linked to the weight. The battery capacity of the mouse is increased to 2800 mAh.
• Today, every mouse has at least three buttons (left, right and scroll buttons),here two more buttons are added on sides and
controlled with thumb. The fourth and fifth buttons are programmable so that certain functions can be assigned. So a total of 5
buttons are placed.
• Normally a wireless mouse has a tracking range of 10 m, which is increased to 15 m which is enough to let customer use it from
across a pretty large room.
• Coefficient of friction is a major factor to be considered while designing a computer mouse, it determines the smoothness of
which the mouse functions.  If the coefficient of friction is too high, it won't be comfortable in the long run using your hand-
precision muscles to overcome the resistance. On the other hand, zero probably isn't optimal either, so its reduced to minimum.
• Raw material consist of light weight  acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic and rubber coatings on the sides and roller for
operational comfort.
• 3 sets of RGB Lightings are used as an attractive element to the mouse.
• Injection Moulding is the process for manufacturing outer case of the mouse .
Target values and Trade-
off’s
• The target value for the raw material is considered to be one of the difficult thing to achieve because
we are planning to use the Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene(ABS) plastic along with the rubber
coating. Because considering the fact of durability to meet the target value but also on the same
side we have to consider the price range. We should not exceed the certain limit of purchase,
thinking from a consumer’s point of view. To meet the actual size we may use the plastic that is
more thick so it may increase the durability but at the same time it will add to the weight of mouse.
• However, if we manage to use the best quality raw material within the price bracket that are quite
hard tasks. But also there is something that may have a vital role to overcome the difficulty and it is
how we will manufacture it. The manufacturing process has the highest weightage to meet. More
smooth the process is, more fine product will be achieved which results in increase in strength of the
competitiveness in the present market.
Target values and its Difficulty
rating
Some of the target values we set need an adjustment as it is difficult to achieve, which may compromise in
satisfying the customer needs.
• If we reduce the dimensions of a mouse to make it more comfortable, it creates a difficulty in its
manufacturing process. We know that the manufacturing process becomes difficult when the size of a
product is reduced as it needs more care, skill and technology. As the size of mouse is reduced the
manufacturing process must be done carefully and efficiently without any damage to material. As a result it
may increase the purchase cost to the company so it create more difficulty.
• There may be a difficulty in achieving the target value of the purchasing price. When we use good quality
raw materials, the purchasing price may vary which makes it difficult to achieve the target value wee have
set.
• The target value of tracking range of the mouse need to be adjusted as it may be difficult to achieve it. The
tracking range of a mouse can be increased only with advanced technology and skills. So the difficulty rating
we have set for the tracking range needs to be adjusted
Reality with respect to Price Point,
Technology and Difficulty rating
• Considering all the features that we provide on the mouse and by co-relating it with the price point it might not be
an easy task. If we use the best raw materials available to manufacture a computer mouse then there would be
slight change in purchasing cost. So in order to make it reality with respect to price point we could use recycled
materials which reduces the cost and also increases the productivity. For example the plastics used for mouse
shell can be recycled and used. Also the battery used can be recycled.
• Day by day we can see the advancement of technology in each field of the production which makes the
manufacturing process easy. So using the advanced technology, the manufacturing process of a computer
mouse(Injection molding) can be done quickly and satisfy the customer needs.
• In order to manufacture a mouse there are some target values which are difficult to achieve. Increasing the battery
capacity makes the process difficult because as the battery capacity increase the weight and size of the mouse
increases. Also as we use a good quality raw material in manufacturing, the purchasing cost for the company may
vary which is very much difficult to lower the cost and satisfy the customers need. Thus selection process of a good
raw material creates some difficulty.
Reasonability with respect to the
Importance Rating
• From the figure it is determined that we have given more importance to customer needs such as low cost,
durability, weight and size and aesthetics.
• Because the customer gives the first priority to the cost of a product. The cost of a product must be satisfied
by the customer so that they could buy. So in this case we are manufacturing a computer mouse which is
affordable by everyone and satisfying other customer needs.
• Then the customer gives priority to the product’s durability. The product should be both cheaper and
durable which attracts the customers. Here we manufacture a mouse which has a high durability than other
competitors which can attract the customers.
• A product which is light in weight and size with good aesthetics is one of the main characteristics that should
be considered. Here we are developing a compact mouse which makes it easy to be used with a good
aesthetics which would definitely attract the customers.
The Critical Few
Here we consider manufacturing process, raw material, purchasing price and dimensions as the critical few HOW’s. Because
these technical descriptors has high relative weight. comparing other descriptors. So the technical descriptors with higher
relative weight is taken as critical few which indicates that these values have a strong relationship with customer needs.
The relative weight of the critical few HOW’s are given below
• Manufacturing process - 18.8%
• Raw material - 18.8%
• Purchasing price - 16.2%
• Dimensions – 13.1%
Since these critical few HOW’s have a strong relationship with customer needs we have to develop a mouse considering these
factors. So we have to develop a mouse of a compact size in an estimated purchasing price by using good raw materials and
also the manufacturing process must be done carefully and efficiently to be competitive in the market and satisfy the
customer needs.
CONCLUSION
The report shows what quality Function Deployment (QFD) is and how to use QFD
to determine the quality of a Product using the House of Quality. This report gives
an exact idea on how to manufacture a product by satisfying both the customer
needs and technical descriptors and to develop a product more productively and
efficiently which increases its competitiveness in the market.
