WHAT IS ACCOUNTING?
The Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA)
• Accounting is defined by the PICPA as a system that measures
corporate activities, processes data into reports, and conveys
results to decision makers.

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA)


• According to the AICPA, it is "the art of recording, classifying, and
summarizing in a significant manner in terms of money, transactions, and
events that are, at least in part, of a financial nature, and evaluating the
outcomes thereof."

FUNCTION OF ACCOUNTING IN BUSINESS


• As a language of business, accounting is primarily utilized
whenever there is business transaction.
• Accounting is the process of communicating business
information to business owners and stakeholders

HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF ACCOUNTING


• Accounting is as old as civilization itself. It has evolved in response to
various social and economic needs of men. Accounting started as a
simple recording of repetitive exchanges.
• Accounting history is frequently regarded as indistinguishable from
finance and business history.

14TH CENTURY – DOUBLE-ENTRY BOOKKEEPING


• The spread of double entry bookkeeping by Luca Pacioli (The Father of
Accounting) in 14th century Italy is often regarded as the most
important event in accounting history. Pacioli was a friend and
contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci, and he was highly regarded in his
day.

• The Italians of the 14th and 16th centuries are often regarded as the
forefathers of modern accounting, having been the first to commonly
employ Arabic numbers rather than Roman numerals for maintaining
corporate accounts. Summa de Arithmetica by Luca Pacioli was the first
book published with a full chapter on double-entry bookkeeping.
