Cloud & Cloud Computing

 What is a Cloud?
 "The cloud" refers to servers that are accessed over the Internet, and
the software and databases that run on those servers.
 What is Cloud Computing?
 Cloud computing is the delivery of computing services over the
Internet (“the cloud”) to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and
economies of scale.
 Computing services—include servers, storage, databases,
networking, software, analytics, and intelligence.
 Cloud servers are located in data centers all over the world.
 By using cloud computing, users and companies don't have to
manage physical servers themselves or run software
applications on their own machines.

Pictorial explanation

Cloud computing is a
model for enabling
ubiquitous, convenient,
on-demand network
access to a shared pool
of configurable
computing resources that
can be rapidly
provisioned and released
with minimal
management effort or
service provider
interaction.

Software as a service (SaaS):

 Running applications in the cloud
(typically, companies use this service or applications on
usage basis, and not owned by the business)
 Programs run on the service company’s servers
 A standard PC program displays output and receives user
commands and data

 Advantages of using the cloud for business:

 Cost savings
 24/7 Accessibility
 Collaboration – able to share with anyone online
 Reliability – low risk of lost of files/applications
 No specific software installation
 Drawbacks of using the cloud for business:
 Internet connection affects application availability
 Data security and privacy risks
 Specialty tools and features not always available
 No way of securely deleting data/file

Different types of clouds

 Public cloud
 Everyone or anyone can have access
 Less security as it is open to everyone
 Private cloud
 Normally within an organization and its staff can access
 Definitely more secure
 Hybrid cloud
 Mixture where some things are meant for public while others
are internal
