A NOVEL ROUTE FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF

CELLULOSE AND STARCH BASED BIO - PLASTIC

FOR PACKAGING PURPOSE
INTRODUCTIO
N
Petroleum based plastics materials and their non-biodegradability has been a main cause of ecological concerns and hence, the effort has been continuing in the search for 'green'
replacement. Thus, to reduce the ecological concerns we proposed a blend of bioplastic to improvise the strength and make it compostable in nature. A bio-plastic material made from low
quality cotton fibre (which lacks in textile applications) and its blend with any starch materials such as potato and corn may be good alternative to produce the same using a set of
procedure in laboratory. In context to above background and issues, herein, we proposed the synthesis of blended bio-polymer made of using cotton cellulose and starch of potato and corn
in appropriate proportion. In the procedure, we dissolved cotton fibers in Para Formaldehyde and Dimethyl sulfoxide. After that starch is blended with cellulose and it will be used to
produce transparent and flexible films from the methods of casting, gelation, regeneration, plasticization and hot-pressing. Films were characterized on the basis of their properties such
as physicochemical and mechanical properties. The bio plastic shows much improved tensile strength compared to raw cotton cellulose and raw starch. This experiment gives a new avenue
for production of bio-plastic and helps in reduction of petrochemical based plastics and its substitute.

RESEARCH GAP
• Based on literature, it can be observed that there is lack in preparation of bioplastic.
• Cellulose based bioplastic is difficult to prepare however, it’s strength is more compared
to starch based plastic.
• Starch based bioplastic is easy to prepare but it strength and temperature endurance is
low.
• Aliphatic polyesters , Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene
(PP) are affected the environment

RESEARCH
Loophole In Current Bioplastic Production Methods

DISCUSSION
• Soy protein based bioplastic losses its mechanical
properties based on moisture level.
• Starch based bioplastic have a low endurance of temperature,
its strengths less and after production it becomes brittle.
• Bacteria based bioplastic production process is complex
because
it requires a variety of chemicals and controlled atmosphere.

How We Are over Coming from Loopholes of Previous

Method
• Unlike soy protein based bioplastic, the bioplastic made from a
mixture of cellulose and starch never loses its mechanical
properties under a given condition.
• Unlike starch based bioplastic, our bioplastic have a high
endurance at high temperature, high strength and flexible.
• Production of bioplastic from a mixture of cellulose and starch
requires least quantity of chemicals but like bacteria
