Miss Brown Kindergarten Class

Standards & Objectives
1. K.NS.1  Count forward by ones and tens to 100.
2. K.NS.2  Count forward by ones beginning from any number less than 100.
3. K.NS.3  Read numbers from 0 – 20 and represent a number of objects 0 – 20 with a written numeral.
4. K.NS.4 Understand the relationship between number and quantity. Connect counting to cardinality by
demonstrating an understanding that: the last number said tells the number of objects in the set
(cardinality); the number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they
are counted (conservation of number); each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one more
and each previous number name refers to a quantity that is one less.
5. K.NS.5  Count a given number of objects from 1 – 20 and connect this sequence in a one-to- one manner.
Number sense

What is number sense?

• Number sense is a group of skills that allow people to work with numbers.
These skills are key to doing math — and many other tasks.
How to use Number Sense?
• Understanding quantities, grasp concepts like more and less, and larger
and smaller. Understanding the order of numbers in a list: 1st, 2nd, 3rd,
etc. Understanding symbols that represent quantities (7 means the same
thing as seven)
Is Number Sense important?
• Number sense is very important because, good number sense helps
children manipulate numbers to make calculations easier and gives them
the confidence to be flexible in their approach to solving problems.
Children who develop number sense can assess how reasonable an answer
is, and routinely estimate answers before calculating.
Example of Number sense
• Understanding that 8 is made up of 7 and 1, 6 and 2, 5 and 3, as well as 4
and 4.
• Another example is 7 plus 3 = 10
