• The materials whose electrical conductivity lies between those of
conductors and insulators are known as Semiconductors. • Semiconductors are used in manufacturing of electrical components such as Diodes and Transistors which are use to manufacture modern day electronic devices such as radio, computers and mobile phones etc. Classification of Semiconductor:- • Semiconductors can be classified mainly into 2 categories:- 1.Intrinsic type 2.Extrinsic type • Intrinsic type material is very pure and possess poor conductivity. In case, of Extrinsic type material small amount of impurities are added (i.e, Doping) which cause change in electrical conductivity of the material. Why Semiconductors? • Semiconductors are the material whose varying conditions like temperature and impurity content can easily change their conductivity. • This combinations of various semiconductors types together generates devices with special electrical properties, which allow us to control the electrical signals.
