Fire Warden/Marshal Duties

What is the role of a Fire Warden?


A Fire Warden has 2 roles:
1)A routine daily role (essential for fire prevention)
2)Dealing with emergency evacuations of occupants to a
place of safety.
Fire Wardens are appointed to monitor and coordinate
activities in the event of a fire. The role of the Fire Warden is
critical to ensure incident control.

Routine Daily Role


 
•Check daily the general fire safety of the area, building or floor the Warden has
been allocated.
•Check daily corridors and walkways to ensure combustible materials are not
stored there.
•Reporting immediately critical matters such as gas leaks or blocked fire doors.
•Taking action to rectify critical matters where possible.
•Assisting Supervisor & Safety Officer during the site inspections.
•Checking that occupants are not smoking or cooking in dormitories.

• Checking that workers do not leave cooking appliances
unattended.
• Monitor escape routes to see they are kept free of
obstructions,
• Check that fire doors (inside building) are not tied, propped or
wedged open where they should not be.
• To check that fire escape doors are not obstructed,
• To check that extinguishers are where they should be and no
obvious misuse or defect has occurred,
• During scheduled fire alarm tests over a period of weeks or
months, check that the alarm can be heard in all rooms and
all parts of their allocated area.

Dealing With Emergencies - When You Hear The Alarm

Your role is critical. You must take LEADERSHIP of your


area during the emergency.

Get Ready
•Puton your high-visibility jacket or armband.
•Grab your flashlight and copy of Attendees Register.

Follow R-A-C-E Procedure

Rescue (If necessary and safe to do so)visitors and colleagues in


immediate life threatening danger.

Alarm:
Ensure that the alarm has been raised.
Initiate the alarm protocol which consists of 3 steps:
•Shout “Fire” loud enough for other staff to hear.
•Pull the alarm.
•Dial 110 and your facility-specific emergency telephone number:

•Give specific location in the following order: Facility,


building, floor, area/unit, room number.
•Describe the emergency and nature of the fire including

any injured persons.


•Give your name, badge number and telephone number.
•Wait for the responder to repeat back the information

to ensure accuracy then confirm details.


•Stay on the line until released by the emergency

responder to provide clarification or receive instructions

Confine:
The smoke and fire. Check rooms, close doors and windows.

Extinguish:
if possible, using the portable fire extinguisher (or fire hose if
provided).
Direct one person to fetch appropriate extinguisher. If safe to
do so, attempt to extinguish fire using PASS procedure.

Evacuate:
•Search through your allocated area, turning off equipment
and closing doors/windows in passing but not delaying your
own escape, while encouraging people to leave via the
nearest fire escape route.
•Check all accessible rooms including toilets and public rooms

to make sure people are beginning their evacuation.


•The Fire Warden should normally be the last person to leave

their allocated area.

• Report to the Manager/ Supervisor at the assembly


area to advise if your area is clear & if anyone is
missing.
• Assist the Supervisor with crowd control, verbally
encouraging people towards the assembly area.
• Ensure no-one tries to return to their
accommodation to rescue personal items.
• Take part in any post-alarm de-briefing to identify
any shortcomings in the evacuation procedures.

Written Plan
Emergency Plan must include:
•Facility Information
•How to report an Emergency
•Alarms and signals to alert employees
•Emergency Phone numbers
•Responsibilities to be clearly defined
•Diagrams should be developed for critical
information
•Assembly areas
•Search and rescue procedures

Emergency Evacuation Planning


• Procedures for shutting down equipment during
emergencies
• Recovery strategy should include plans to restore the
operations
• Identify alternative emergency routes
• Give guided tours to all employees
• Operators must know their specific procedures in
case of an emergency
• Alarm system clearly recognizable

Evacuation Planning - On-the-Job


Know the way out from your work area.
Know the location of the closest manual fire alarm station.
Know the location of the closest fire extinguisher.
In the event of a fire, dial the emergency number, evacuate the
location & pull the manual fire alarm station.
Review the location of the meeting place for the group in the event
of a building evacuation.
Utilize a register to ensure everyone is accounted for. This re-
emphasizes the importance of communication between team
members.
