Integrated Flight Information System (IFIS)

IFIS-5010 by R. Collins

The Integrated Flight Information System (IFIS), installed as an option with PA-05
avionics suite, provides supplemental aircraft situational awareness information.

The IFIS provides a mass storage to display enhanced map overlay, electronic
Charts, geographic, political features, airspace, airways on a dedicated Multifunction
Display (MFD), AFD-3010E Adaptive Flight Display, that is a option necessary for IFIS
operations.

The FSU-5010 provides processing and mass storage for all IFIS
functions. The FSU communicates with the MFD via a high bandwidth
Ethernet bus.

This system is not intended as a means for navigation.

Component description

The FILE SERVER APPLICATION S/W FSA-5000


P/N 810-0001-004 provides the basic operating system
for the FSU
The FSU-5010 provides processing and mass storage
for all IFIS functions. The FSU communicates with the
MFD via a high bandwidth Ethernet bus.
The CCP provides a dedicated interface to the MFD for
controlling the IFIS functions via onscreen menus.

Component description

Separated +28 V dc sources, fed by the Right Avionics


single feed bus, are required for normal and backup
operation of the FSU.

Both sources of power are applied through protection


circuits to the FSU power supply.

The FSU supplies APM POWER (+8 V dc) and APM


GROUND to the ECU.

ECU discretes

The CLOCK discrete input is applied to EEPROMs U1 and U2. This


input is used to synchronize the SERIAL DATA IN and SERIAL
DATA OUT data buses.
 The SERIAL DATA IN discrete output transmits configuration
data to the ECU. Only when the chip is selected and the write-
protect is disabled the EEPROM accept this data.
 The CHIP SELECT 1 discrete determines if the EEPROM U1 is
selected to receive or transmit data (ground = selected, +5 V dc
= not selected).
 The CHIP SELECT 2 discrete determines if the EEPROM U2 is
selected to receive or transmit data (ground = selected, +5 V dc
= not selected).

ECU discretes

The WRITE PROTECT 1 discrete determines if the EEPROM U1


will receive or transmit data if selected (ground = transmit, +5 V
dc = receive).
 The WRITE PROTECT 2 discrete determines if the EEPROM U2
will receive or transmit data if selected (ground = transmit, +5 V
dc = receive).
The SERIAL DATA OUT discrete is output from EEPROMs U1 and
U2. Only when the chip is selected and the write-protect
discrete is enabled, the EEPROM will transmit data.

FSU Discretes

The FANMONITOR discrete from the MMT indicates the


operating condition of the MMT fan (ground = normal, open =
failed).
The STRUT SWITCH discrete from the main strut switch
indicates if the aircraft is on the ground or in the air (ground =
on ground, open = in air).

ARINC 429 Inputs

The FSU uses three ARINC 429 receivers. Each receiver is


individually software configurable as high speed (100 kHz) or
low speed (12.5 kHz).
Following are the inputs that are used by the IFIS:
The L-GP-5 digital data bus is configured as high speed and
inputs IAPS data generated by the left IOC.
The L-CMU-11 digital data bus is configured as high speed and
inputs CMS data generated in the CMU (not available on P180).
The L-CMU-13 digital data bus is configured as high speed and is
the dataload return for the CMU and radio (not available on
P180).

ARINC 429 Outputs

The FSU uses two ARINC 429 transmitters. Each transmitter is


individually software configurable as high speed (100 kHz) or
low speed (12.5 kHz).

Following are the outputs that are used by the IFIS:


The L-FSU-1 digital data bus is configured as high speed and
transmits advanced display feature data to the left IOC.
The L-FSU-3 digital data bus is configured as high speed and
transmits data to the optional Collins Portable Access System
(CPAS) for ARINC 429 data load.

Ethernet Inputs

The FSU provides a total of four Ethernet receivers.


Following are the receivers that are used by the IFIS.
The L-MFD-1 Ethernet bus inputs advanced feature data from
the MFD. The R-FSU-2 Ethernet bus inputs advanced feature
data from the FSU.
The L-CPAS-3 Ethernet bus inputs advanced feature data from
the optional Collins Portable Access System (CPAS).
The L-PRINTER-4 Ethernet bus inputs advanced feature data to
an optional printer.

ARINC 422 Inputs

The FSU provides a total of three ARINC 422 receivers. Following


are the inputs that are normally used by the IFIS:
The L-FMC-5 digital data bus is configured as high speed and
inputs return data generated during dataload.
The MDC-3 digital data bus is configured as high speed and
inputs return data generated during dataload.
The optional T-FMC-5 digital bus is configured as high speed and
inputs return data generated during dataload.

MMT-5000 Equipment Mount

The MMT is used to mount the FSU-5010 and the ECU-3000. The
MMT also has a fan that provides forced air cooling to the FSU.
A fan monitor circuit monitors the operation of the mount fan
and outputs a discrete to the FSU indicating the fan condition.
The on-side +28 V dc aircraft power is applied through a
protection circuit to the MMT power supply. The power supply
develops the internal supply level for the fan and the fan
monitor circuit.

The FILE SERVER APPLICATION S/W FSA-5000


P/N 810-0001-004 provides the basic operating
system for the FSU

The MAPS OVERLAY application key OVL-5000


P/N 810-0003-001 shall be updated every 28
days in synchronism with the FMS NAV
database.

The ELECTRONIC CHARTS application key ECH-5000


P/N 810-0002-001 (Jeppsen subscription) shall be
updated every 14 days.

The PORTABLE ACCESS SOFTWARE CPAS-3000


P/N 810-0032-002 allows upload and download of
files from the FSU to an external laptop.

Software

An external laptop shall be connected to the FSU-


5010 by the CPAS connector placed in the pedestal.

FSU upload operations are enabled only when the


aircraft is on ground.

CPAS-3000 also enables upload of the FMS NAV


database and upload and data dowload of the
Proline 21 diagnostic of the Maintenance Diagnostic
Computer (MDC).

For the detailed operation refer to R. Collins operator's


guide IFIS-5000 Integrated Flight Information System
for the Piaggio P-180 (CPN 523-0806347) and Piaggio
Pilot Operating Handbook (180-MAN-0030-01102), as
part of documentation provided to the users. Refer to
Piaggio Maintenance Manual 180-MAN-0200-1105 for
uploading of enhanced maps and electronic charts.

Troubleshooting & test
Make sure that the formats on all of the displays
appear normal for the position of the installed display
and the configuration of the aircraft.
Also, make sure that the fan on the left MMT-5000 is
rotating freely and is blowing cooling air through the
FSU.
