REAL LIFE EVENT: Mt. Pulag re-opens to Tourists

DATE OF THE EVENT: February 27, 2020
LOCATION: Mount Pulag, Benguet
BACKGROUND OF THE EVENT
Following a suspension of tourism-related activities due to
COVID-19's threat, the Mt. Pulag National Park has now
restarted operations and is once again open to visitors as of
February 27, 2020.

The southern portion of Northern Luzon's Cordillera

ES-Q2-ACT02 SUBGROUP

BACKGROUND OF THE EVENT

Central mountain range, between the towns of La Trinidad

(near Baguio) and Bontoc, is home to Mt. Pulag, the highest
peak in the island of Luzon and a well-known hiking destination.
The highest mountain in Luzon, at 2,930 meters, is part of its
mountain range. Rugged terrain, steep slopes, and deep ravines
have all been attributes of Mt. Pulag.

Mt. Pulag is a noted habitat for threatened species such as

the Northern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat, Philippine Brown Deer, and
Luzon Pygmy Fruit Bat due to the wide diversity of flora and
fauna in the area. Several orchid plants, as well as other
uncommon vegetation, were discovered in the region. Mt.
Pulag acts as a watershed, supplying water to settlements,
industries, hydroelectric power generation, and aquaculture. A
watershed is a land area that is drained by a fixed body of
water and has a shared outlet for surface runoff.

According to Benguet Mayor Faustino Aquisan, preventive

measures such as hand washing, covering one's mouth when
coughing or sneezing, and promptly informing health officials if
someone is suspected of having Covid-19 would be
implemented in conjunction with the reopening of Mount
Pulag. A large group of tourists are expected as Mount Pulag
reopens — approximately 200 to 300 hikers are expected to
arrive every weekend, but only 60 to 70 are able to reach the
peak, according to Mayor Aquisan. Furthermore, as a mountain
preservation strategy, camping spots are limited and cannot be
fully utilized.
RELATED GEOLOGICAL PROCESS/PROCESSES:
Plate Boundary; Convergent Boundary

EXPLANATION
on how the event is related to the identified geological process/es
Mt. Pulag is known to be the second highest mountain in
the Philippines with its national park being the highest peak in
Luzon. Its national park contains steep slopes and is rugged
since it is located within the Philippine Cordillera Mountain
Range. The creation of Mt. Pulag is directly associated with
that of a common geological process–convergent boundary,
which is a type of plate boundary where two continental plates
move towards each other, pushing a part of the landmass
upwards, resulting in the creation of mountains.

RELATED GEOLOGICAL PROCESS/PROCESSES:
Mass Wasting: Mudflow and Erosion

EXPLANATION
on how the event is related to the identified geological process/es
Geological processes under mass wasting could be seen in
the incident that occurred during early July in Banaue, Ifugao.
Since Banaue is situated at the foot of the Cordillera Mountain
Ranges, the area is more prone to landslides and flash floods
that directly affect the communities located there. Landslides
fall under mass wasting, which affects the natural stability of a
slope and involves gravity in order for soil and rocks to go
downslope.
