I. Individually Guided Staff Development


• Personnel determines his or her own goals and
selects the activities that will result in the
achievement of those goals

• read professional publications, have discussions with


colleagues, and experiment with new strategies in
doing his tasks

II. Observation/Assessment
• provide the personnel with data that can be reflected
upon and analyzed for the purpose of improving his
tasks

• peer coaching, mentoring and clinical supervision,


peer evaluation, individual conference

III. Involvement in Development/


Improvement Process
• develop strategies, design programs, or engage in
systematic improvement processes of their tasks

• Assignment of special program/project,


chairmanship, by reading, discussion, observation,
training, and/or trial and error for improvement or to
solve a problem

IV. Training
• workshop-type sessions in which the presenter is the
expert who establishes the content and flow of
activities;
• conducted with a clear set of objectives or learner
outcomes – development of desired competencies

• Induction, in-basket, refresher, sequential, through


online/computer-based, lecture, demonstration, role-
playing, simulation, micro-teaching that will aid
personnel in achieving the desired outcomes

V. Inquiry

• Action research
• high school teacher alters her lesson plan from first
period class to find out if this will produce improved
student understanding in second period
• supervisors study basic research techniques, formulate
research questions, gather and analyze data, and use their
findings to improve their tasks
• group of superintendents gathers weekly for an hour or
two at their to examine their management concerns and
their respective actions

Definition of Terms
CONFERENCE
meeting for lectures and discussion: a meeting, sometimes
lasting for several days, in which people with a common interest
participate in discussions or listen to lectures to obtain
information

MEETING
gathering of people for discussion: an occasion when people
gather together to discuss something
SEMINAR
meeting on specialized subject: a single session or short, often
one-day meeting devoted to presentations on and discussion of a
specialized topic, usually at an advanced or professional level

TRAINING
acquiring of skill: the process of teaching or learning a skill
INDUCTION - provided to new employees in order to assist them in adjustment to
their new job tasks and to help them become familiar with their new work
environment
 IN-BASKET - acquainting new or promoted employees with the complexities of
their jobs by presenting them with a range of problem they might find in their 'in
basket' when they take up the job

 REFRESHER – short-term course aimed at recall and reinforcement of previously


acquired knowledge and skills

 SEQUENTIAL – phasing of training in a manner that builds new knowledge or


skills on already-learnt material
 COMPUTER-BASED – use of computers in imparting desired competencies to the
personnel
