 Methods to Separate Mixtures

As a mixture is formed physically,it can be separated

physically.
EXAMPLE : A sandwich is made of
bread,vegetables and
meat. Therefore ,we can separate the ingredients
easily through a physical method.

• Separation by using magnet
• Sedimentation
• Floatation
• Chromatography
• Sieving

The separation method depends on:

 Physical properties of the substances present in the mixture
 Substance(s) to be obtained from the mixture
(a) Filtration – A method used to separate an
insoluble solid from a mixture of solid and
liquid.

Filter paper is a method used to

separate powder from a coffee drink.
(b) Distillation –The method used to separate a
completely miscible liquid-liquid mixture that
have different boiling points.
(c)Seperation Using Magnet –Magnetic attraction
can be used to separate two solid mixtures in which one
of the substances is magnetic and the other is not.

(e)Floatation method –Can be used to separate
soluble and insoluble materials in water.
EXAMPLE:
Oil has a lower density
than water.Therefore,oil
will float on the water
surface.A separating
funnel can be used to
separate the oil and water.
(f)Chromatography method
-Small amount of mixture separated.
-Is usually used to check document fraud by separating the colours
from the ink used.
-Allows us to identify if there are any harmful food colourings
present in our food.
