Communication is the systemic process in which individuals


interact with and through symbols to create and interpret
meanings (Wood, 1997)

▪ Verbal – Non-verbal communication


▪ Visual communication

Verbal – Non-verbal

• Verbal communication refers to the use of words to share


information with other people

Although many use the term to describe only spoken communication,


Verbal communication can be divided into:
• Oral communication
• Written communication

Verbal – Non-verbal

• Non-verbal communication refers to the sending or receiving of


wordless messages

It is conveyed through:
• Gestures
• Body language
• Facial expression
• Posture

Visual Communication

• Visual communication uses visuals to convey information and


messages. Visual communication is essential in any work
environment

Can be achieved through:


• Digital mode
• Text

• Context is the circumstance or environment in which


communication takes place

Intrapersonal Communication

• Intrapersonal communication is communication with one’s


self

• Other labels include: self or inner talk, inner dialogue, self


verbalization or self statement

Reasons for Intrapersonal Communication

• Introspection and processing of feelings


• Rationalize before making a decision
• Boost confidence when about to do a task
• Consoling oneself after a negative experience

Interpersonal Communication

• Interpersonal communication is the interactive


communication between two or more people

• It is meant to establish or deepen one’s relationship with


others

• Can be formal and less informal

Extended Communication

• Extended communication involves the use of electronic


media such as:
▪ Tele, audio, or phone conferencing
▪ Video conferencing (skype calls, messenger calls)
▪ E-conferencing (webinars)
▪ Other technological means

Organizational Communication

• Organizational communication focuses on the role that


communication plays in organizational context

• For an organization to be successful, a system of


communication should be put in place

Four Approaches to Organizational Communication

1. Downward communication – refers to the type that flows


from upper to lower positions such as a superior to
subordinate (ex. President to a manager), usually asking
individuals to perform tasks

2. Upward communication – refers to communication


transmitted by subordinate to superiors such as views or
feedback on organizational policies, issues related to their
job, etc.

3. Horizontal communication – is lateral in approach as it


takes place among people belonging in the same level but
coming from different departments or units (program heads,
subject coordinators) to facilitate performance tasks through
proper coordination

4. Diagonal communication – is diagonal in nature as


employees from different departments and units working at
various levels communicate and coordinate with each other

Organizational Communication

• Informal communication also known as the grapevine


comes from unofficial channels of flow

• Messages from different levels of the organization are transmitted

• Occurs due to dissatisfaction of some employees accompanied by


uncertainty such as superiors playing favorites, unfavorable
company rules, etc.

Intercultural Communication

• Intercultural communication is the communication


between or among people having different linguistic,
religious, ethnic, social, and professional backgrounds

• Gender difference can also affect communication as


individuals with different gender orientations interpret
messages differently. This particularly happens with non-
verbal communication
