WORKSHOP:
RESILIENCE (PART 1)
:2

WHAT IS STRESS?
:3

Stress is what you feel when you are worried or

uncomfortable about something. This worry in your mind
can make your body feel bad. You may feel angry, upset,
scared, or afraid — which can give you a stomachache or a
headache.
:4
ARE THE FOLLOWING
SITUATIONS NORMALLY
STRESSFUL?

:9 WHAT MAKES YOU STRESSED?
:10
IS STRESS GOOD OR BAD?

How can some stress help you in the following situations?

:11 Preparing for a test
:12 Playing in a sports competition
:13 Preparing for a job interview
:14 Sometimes stress can help us perform when we
are challenged.

But if we are stressed for too long it’s not good

for our mind and body.
:15
IS STRESS GOOD OR BAD?

:16
So what is resilience?

Resilience is the way we deal with stress and

challenges.
2 minutes preparation

GROUP WORK 1-2 minutes speaking

:17
IELTS part 2 style question: Listen to your group members
and report back to the class

Tell me about a challenge that you had

You should say:

- What the challenge was

- Who you were with
- Why it was challenging

And what did you do to overcome the challenge?

:18
BUT HOW DO WE BUILD
RESILIENCE?
:19
Using traits to help with resilience
…but firstly, what is a trait?
:20
A trait is a part of your personality. It is a way that you often behave in certain
situations

Traits can be positive or negative.

For example, if you always see the good or positive side of

things, you would have an optimistic trait.

If you always see the bad or negative side of things, you

would have a pessimistic trait.
Tell me, is the glass of water half full or half empty?
:21
In English we often say, ‘he / she see’s the glass half empty’ which
:22 means they are pessimistic (they focus on the bad).

Half empty

Half full

Or we could say ‘he / she see’s the glass half full’ which means they are
optimistic (they focus on the good).
For example,

:23
Ugh, it’s raining It’s raining! That’s
today, I can’t go great for my
out and play parent’s plants

Which one is an optimistic view and which one is a pessimistic view?

For example,

:24
Ugh, it’s raining It’s raining! That’s
today, I can’t go great for my
out and play parent’s plants

Which one is an optimistic view and which one is a pessimistic view?

:25

It’s ok to realise the negative sides, but make sure to balance it out with seeing the positive sides
YOUR GO!

“The food I wanted to order has run out”
