What is Anchor Text?

●Anchor text is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink, linking

to another document or location on the web.. It usually
appears as blue and underlined text.
●Anchor text can provide both search engines and users
relevant contextual information about the content of the
link’s destination.

 Importance

1. It tells your readers what to expect before they click the link. Anchor
words are the promise about what is on the other side of the link, so
they must be highly relevant.
2. It tells Google Algorithms what your content is about. Google’s
algorithms use your anchor choices to make sure you are not engaging
in spammy practices and to understand the topics you are linking to in
your topic.
 Types

● Exact-match: Anchor text is “exact match” if it includes a keyword that

mirrors the page that is being linked to. For example: ‘Digital Marketing’
linking to a page about ‘Digital Marketing’.
● Partial-match: Anchor text that includes a variation of the keyword on the
linked to page. For example: ‘Digital Marketing Strategies’ linking to a page
about ‘Digital Marketing’.
● Branded: A brand name used as anchor text. For example: ‘HubSpot’ linking
to a page about ‘HubSpot Blogs’.
 Types

● Naked Link: A URL that is used as an anchor. For example: ‘

www.hubspot.com’ is a naked link anchor.
● Generic: A generic word or phrase that is used as the anchor. For
example: “Click Here” is a common generic anchor.
● Images: Whenever an image is linked, Google will use the text contained
in the image’s alt attributes as the anchor text.
 Best Practices to write Anchor Text

● Avoid too many exact match anchor text.

● Do not link to or earn links from toxic sites.
● Make sure anchor words are relevant.
● Avoid using Keyword-Rich anchors for internal links.
● Distribute different types of anchor text wisely.
● Pay attention to surrounding text.
● Don’t neglect your Image Alt tags.
