4.1 What Are Natural Resources?

At the end of this section, you should be able to answer

the following questions:

What are natural

resources?

How do Man’s
activities affect the
environment and its
natural resources?

4.1 What Are Natural Resources?

What are natural resources?

• Natural resources are resources that we obtain from
the environment.
• Natural resources can also be made into different
materials that we use in our daily lives.
Sand is a natural resource
that is used to make
concrete for building
houses.

Food and materials are

obtained from some plants
and animals.

4.1 What Are Natural Resources?

Natural resources can be classified into renewable resources

and non-renewable resources.

• Renewable resources will not run out. They are

resources that renew or replenish themselves.

Chicks grow into adult

chickens, which reproduce
by laying eggs that can
hatch into new chicks.

4.1 What Are Natural Resources?

Natural resources can be classified into renewable resources

and non-renewable resources.

• Non-renewable resources are found in limited or

fixed amounts. They will run out one day.

Coal is found in the ground in limited Copper is found in the ground in

amounts. It is used as a fuel to produce fixed amounts. It is used to make
electricity. wires.

4.2 How Do Man’s Activities Affect the Environment
and Its Natural Resources?

As Man continues to use the natural resources available,

they can run out or become depleted.

Fossil fuels and materials like metal and wood are in limited
amounts and can get depleted as they cannot be replaced.

4.2 How Do Man’s Activities Affect the Environment
and Its Natural Resources?

Deforestation destroys habitats that provide shelter and food

for many living things.

Red pandas that live in trees have Without trees and grass, rain and wind

and Its Natural Resources?

Name five animals that will lose their habitats when trees are
cut down.

Discuss how we can prevent this.

4.2 How Do Man’s Activities Affect the Environment
and Its Natural Resources?

Littering and dumping of waste into water bodies

pollute the environment in many ways.

survive.

4.2 How Do Man’s Activities Affect the Environment
and Its Natural Resources?

Burning of fossil fuels releases gases that

can have harmful effects on the environment.
• Gases such as carbon dioxide
are released when fossil fuels
are burnt. These gases trap
heat on the Earth and can
cause global warming.
• Gases released as smoke can
dissolve in rainwater to form
acid rain.
• Gases released from burning
fossil fuels can cause air
pollution.

4.3 What Can We Do to Protect and Care for the
Environment?

At the end of this section, you should be able to answer

the following question:

What can we do to
care for and protect
the environment?

4.3 What Can We Do to Protect and Care for the
Environment?

What can we do to manage waste in our daily lives?

• Dispose of waste properly.

We should not throw

rubbish onto the ground
or into water bodies. We
should throw rubbish into
the correct bins.

4.3 What Can We Do to Protect and Care for the
Environment?

What can we do to manage waste in our daily lives?

• Reduce our use of fossil fuels.

We can walk, cycle,

carpool or take public
transport to reduce our
use of fossil fuels.

4.3 What Can We Do to Protect and Care for the
Environment?

What can we do to manage waste in our daily lives?

• Produce less waste.

We can use reusable

shopping bags to carry our
shopping. This will reduce the
number of plastic bags or
packaging used and hence
reduce waste.

4.3 What Can We Do to Protect and Care for the
Environment?

What can we do to manage waste in our daily lives?

• Recover materials where possible.

We can recover materials from

waste products where possible.
We can recover copper from
cables or wires that we no
longer need. We can also
recover gold from computer
parts or parts of mobile phones.

4.3 What Can We Do to Protect and Care for the
Environment?

What can we do to manage waste in our daily lives?

• Repair products where possible.

We can repair a broken

product instead of throwing it
away and buying a new one.
This will reduce the amount
of waste we produce and
conserve some of our natural
resources.

4.3 What Can We Do to Protect and Care for the
Environment?

What can we do to manage waste in our daily lives?

• Reuse and recycle materials.

We can reuse objects such as

glass jars, plastic containers
and bags. We can also
recycle some objects by
placing them into the correct
bins. This will conserve some
of our natural resources.
