Multiplication

LI: I can multiply through the use of a

range of methods (long, short and grid)
Short multiplication
To multiply 237 by 4 without using a calculator, you can set it out like this:

1. Start with 4 x 7, which is 28, so write the 8 and carry the 2 to the tens column.
2. 4 x 3 = 12, but remember to add the carried 2 to get 14. Write the 4 and carry the 1 to the hundreds
column.
3. 4 x 2 = 8, and we add thee carried 1 to get 9.
Long multiplication
– To complete a long multiplication, follow these steps:
– If you are multiplying a 3 digit number by a two-digit number, simplify the two-
digit multiplier (for instance 24) by splitting it into 20 and 4.
– Then complete two separate multiplications, multiplying first by 20 and then by
4.
– You then add the products of these two sums together to get your final answer.
