Why the Spaniards
Came?
God, Gold and Glory
*God – the first aim of Spain was to
spread Roman Catholic Religion.
*Gold – the second aim was to get rich.
*Glory – and to get political glory.
The Magellan Expedition
*Ferdinand Magellan – He is a
Portuguese explorer. He studied
map making and navigation. He
really planned and wanted to
find the Philippines.
*March 16, 1521 – Magellan
reaches the Philippines.
 
*Strait of Magellan –
secret passage was known
only to Magellan
*September 20, 1517 –
the expedition of Magellan
left Spain for the East. His
fleet consisted of 5 ships
and 265 men.
The Five ships are:
• *The Trinidad
• *Santiago
• *Victoria
• *Concepcion
• *San Antonio
“DISCOVERY” OF
THE PHILIPPINES
Why did Spain advertise it’s landing in the Philippines as
a discovery?
*Inorder to keep away the other rival European power from grabbing its new colony.
The big powers:
1.)Spain
2.)Portugal
3.) England
4.) France
5.) Netherland

Colonialism – the political race to grab new lands around the world.
Rivalry Between Portugal and Spain.
*Pope Alexander VI (1943) – issued 4 papal bulls that
divided the world between Portugal and Spain.
1.) Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) – shifting the
demarcation line made by the Pope.
2.) Treaty of Zaragoza (1529) – the treaty was signed
April 5, 1529, in the Spanish town of Zaragoza,they
quarreled again over the ownership of
Moluccas(spice island) so they made a new
arrangement to fix a new demarcation line.
FRANCISCO SERRANO – in1512, a portuguese
explorer was stranded on the coast of mindanao.
DUARTE BARBOSA – 1516, another portuguese
wrote about sulu in a book of his voyages. later
he became magellan’s brother-in-law
First Mass at Butuan
*March 16, 1521 – Magellan and his
men saw the heights of Samar.
*March 17, 1521- landed at the Island of
Homonhon in Leyte Gulf.
*March 28,1521– they were driven at
Masao, Butuan in Agusan del Norte.
(Limasawa Island)
*Raha Kolambu and Raha Siagu – two
kings met Magellan. In the finest tradition of
Filipino hospitality, they welcomed the
Spaniards.

*SANDUGO – blood compact between
Miguel Lopez De Legazpi And Datu
Sikatuna as a sign of friendship
between the spaniards and filipinos.
this was the first blood compact by a
filipino and a white man.
*March 31, 1521 – the first mass
was held on the shore of Masao,
Butuan(Limasawa) on Easter
Morning. It was said by Father Pedro
de Valderama, the Spanish chaplain.
*Rajah Humabon – the first Filipino chieftain to
embrace Christianity in the Philippines.
April 7,1521 – Magellan landed on cebu. He made a
blood compact with Rajah Humabon.
*Magellan planted a huge wooden cross on the top of
a hill overlooking the sea.
MAGELLAN CLAIMS THE
PHILIPPINES FOR SPAIN
*April 8, 1521 – the ships arrived in cebu.
Magellan took possession of the Island and
named it the Archipelago of St. Lazarus. It was on
St. Lazarus day when he found the island.
THE SPANIARDS GO TO CEBU
*APRIL 7,1521 – spaniard arrived at cebu, they were guided by king kolambu.
APRIL 14,1521 – king humabon and magellan made a blood compact and another cross was planted.

LAPU-LAPU DEFEATS MAGELLAN
April 27, 1521 – Magellan invaded
Mactan. He boasted to Cebuanos
that he did not need their help in
fighting Lapu- lapu. Only 60 men
attacked Mactan.
*Magellan was killed by
stabbed won on April
27,1521, during the battle
of Mactan.
Enrique – the Filipino slave of Magellan, he
was a Cebuano. Magellan bought him in
Malacca slave market.
May 1,1521 – the Spaniards were invited to
a feast day by King Humabon.
September 6, 1522 – the Spaniards reached
the San Lucar,Spain with only 18 survivors.
Results of Magellan’s Voyage
1)It was first voyage around the world.
2)It added to the knowledge about
geography.
3)It made Spain interested in colonizing
the Philippines.

LEGAZPI EXPEDITION (1564)
-led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.
-The new expedition was filted in Mexico, a
colony of Spain. His expedition had four ships and
380 men, most of them Mexicans.
*February 13, 1565 – Legazpi’s expedition landed in
Cebu Island.
*King Sikatuna and King Sigala – in Bohol, Legazpi
made a blood compact
-Since none of the expedition after Magellan
from Loaisa to Villalobos had succeeded in taking
over the Philippines, King Charles I stopped sending
colonizers to the islands.
Other Spanish Expeditions:
THE LOAISA EXPEDITION(1525)
-led by Garcia Jofre Loaisa with
Juan Sebastian Elcano with 7 ships
and 450 men. After the crossing of
the straight of Magellan, the vessels
dispersed by a storm. Unfortunately
Loaisa got ill. He did not recover.
Eventually he died,his men failed to
reached the Philippines.
- sailed off on July 24, 1525.
THE SAAVEDRA EXPEDITION(1527)
-led by Alvaro de Saavedra
-together with 110 men constituted the first
expedition to the Philippines from the Vice
Royalty in Mexico(New Spain). Three ships
were set out to inverstigate what had
happened to the earlier expeditions and
rescue any survivors. Only one ship, the
Florida reached Surigao in Northeastern
Mindanao but failed to colonize.
3.) The Cabot Expedition (1526) led
by Sebastian Cabot
-Cabot became pilot major for
Spain. He sailed in command
of his own expedition in 1526
with 4 ships and 250 men.
With the intention of
following the lead of
Magellan and Garcia Jofre de
Loaisa to the Moluccas.They
failed to find the straight of
Magellan.
Cabot returned to Spain
empty handed in 1530.
The Villalobos Expedition (1543)
-Ruy Lopez De Villalobos set sail for the
Philippines from Navidad, Mexico on November
1,1542.
- is remembered for naming our country “ Islas
Filipinas”, in honor of King Charles’, son Prince
Philip who later became king of Spain.
- his fleet left the island and landed on
Tidore in the Moluccas, where they were
captured by the Portuguese.
-he followed the route taken by Magellan
and reached Mindanao on February 2, 1543.
-he established a colony in Sarangani but
could not stay long because of insufficient food
supply.
CEBU BECOMES THE FIRST SPANISH CITY
to win filipinos, legazpi adopted a policy of
attraction. Many filipinos converted into
christianity.
April 27, 1565 – they arrived from bohol to
cebu
“CITY OF THE MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS”
–He named the town, the first spanish settlement in the
philippines. Her built a fort and a church in what was also
the first spanish outpost in asia.

*legazpi moved to panay on 1569.
THE BATTLE FOR
MANILA
BATTLE FOR MANILA
May 1570 – the first Spanish Expedition to invade
Manila led by Marshal Martin de Goiti. He led 120
spaniards amd 600 Visayan warriors.
Raha Sulayman – the first filipino Moro king of
manila who resisted the Spanish invaders.
June 3, 1571 – Bambolito led his fleet of war boats
to fight Spanish navy.
BATTLE OF MANILA BAY (May 1,1898)
– Commodore George Dewey achieved a crushing
naval victory over the Spanish fllet in the waters
west of the city of manila in the Philippines during
the Spanish-American War.
The Filipinos lost because of three reasons:
*Lakan Dula and Sulayman did not help the other
filipinos.
*The Spaniard have superior weapon.
*About 600 cebuano archers helped the Spaniard in
the battle.
MANILA BECOMES THE CAPITAL.
*JUNE 24, 1571 – LEGAZPI PROCLAIMED
MANILA AS THE NEW CAPITAL OF THE
COLONY.
“DISTINGUISHED AND EVER LOYAL CITY” –
KING PHILIP II GAVE IT A NEW COAT OF ARMS
AND A NEW NAME.
June 24,1976 – Manila was
established as the capital city
of the Philippines by a
presidential order.
Why the Philippines Fell to Spain?
1)We’re not united;
2)Great Commander Legazpi;
3)They have Bigger Cannons, Muskets Swords and
Metal Armor;
4)Religion
