Declarative Statement:
Definition & Function
A declarative statement or a
declarative sentence is the most
common of the 4 sentence types
(declarative, interrogative,
imperative, exclamatory) in the
English language. Declarative
sentences are used to communicate
information.
The 3 Other Sentence Types
 Interrogative Sentence
-a sentence that asks a question
-always ends with a question mark(?)
 Imperative Sentence
-a sentence that gives an instruction, makes a
request, or issues a command
-can end with a period(.), a question mark(?),
and exclamation point(!)
 Exclamatory Sentence
-a sentence that expresses sudden or strong
emotions and feelings
-end with an exclamation point(!)
Declarative Statement:

 subject + verb ...
 final punctuation mark is period
 can be in any tense
 Examples:
 Doctors cure.
 Doctors cure patients.
 Doctors cured patients.
 Doctors will cure patients.

Declarative Statement:
Types
 Simple Sentence: a sentence with one
independent clause and nothing more
Example: The sky looks blue.
 Compound Sentence: a sentence with 2 or
more independent clauses
Example: The sky looks blue, and the
clouds look gray.

 Complex Sentence: a sentence with one
independent clause and any number of
subordinate clauses
Example: If I wear my glasses, the sky looks
blue.
 Compound-Complex Sentence: a sentence with 2
or more independent clauses and one or more
subordinate clauses
Example: If I wear my glasses, the sky looks
blue and the clouds look gray.
