Adjectives
What are Adjectives in English?
The definition of adjectives or adjectives are words that function to provide more information
than a noun. Adjectives in English can also describe or modify pronouns. Examples of
adjectives are beautiful, old, elegant, blue, easy How to Differentiate Adjectives and Adverbs?
The difference between adjectives and adverbs can be seen from their function and also other
components that follow. Here are some differences between adjectives and adverbs:

1. Adjectives act as additional information for nouns (either subject or object) and pronouns,
while adverbs function to explain verbs, adverbs, adjectives.
2. Adjectives are always followed by to be or auxiliary verbs such as is, am, are, was, were,
be, been, to be.
3. Adjectives in sentences are usually followed by a sense of verb which acts as a linking verb
or auxiliary verb, which applies when explaining a noun or pronoun as the subject of the
sentence..
4. In general, an adverb can become an adjective if you add the suffix –ly to the end of the
word. For example, quick (adjective) becomes quickly (adverb), sad (adjective) becomes sadly
(adverb), simple (adjective) becomes simply (adverb), final (adjective) becomes finally
(adverb), and so on.

What is the Difference Between Adjectives and Verbs?
A method that will make it easier for you to learn the difference
between adjectives and verbs is to often read and analyze a
sentence. But, below the English Academy will give you a sneak
peek. Here are the differences between adjectives and verbs in
English:

1. A verb is an action word that states an activity from the


subject. Meanwhile, adjectives are just adverbs.
2. Adjectives tell us more about nouns, while verbs give us more
information about the conditions, experiences, thoughts, or
circumstances of a subject.
Types of English Adjectives
1. Absolute Adjectives

Absolute adjectives are a group of adjectives that have no comparison or
are already the highest description.
example:
Elephants are nearly extinct.”

2. Attributive and Predicative Adjectives


Attributive adjectives usually come before nouns, and function to
describe or change the situation of the noun in more detail, without a
linking verb.
example:
“I was very angry hours ago.”

3. Appositive Adjectives
Appositive adjectives are the traditional grammatical term for an
adjective or set of adjectives that follow a noun, and are usually preceded
by a comma or a hyphen.
example:
“Lisa is a tall girl, slim, strong and, short haired.”
