cells.

o Understand how oxygen is transported around the body.

o Understand blood and its function

BLOOD…
 fluid connective tissue that consists of
plasma, blood cells and platelets.

 circulates throughout our body delivering

oxygen and nutrients to various cells and
tissues.

 makes up 8% of our body weight.

 An average adult possesses around 5-6

litres of blood.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
o Understand blood and its function

FUNCTIONS OF BLOOD…
o Transports oxygen and nutrients to the cells.

o Carries carbon dioxide and wastes away from the cells.

o Helps stabilize internal pH.

o Carries infection fighting cells.

o Helps maintain the body temperature

DISCUSSION…
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
o Understand plasma and its function

BLOOD PLASMA
 liquid part of blood can be contributed to
plasma as it makes up  ~55% of blood.

 RBC and WBC are transported around the

body in the blood plasma.

 pale yellow in color and when separated, it FUNCTION:

consists of salts, nutrients, water,
enzymes,CO2 and waste materials.

 contains important proteins and other

components necessary for overall health.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
RED BLOOD CELLS o Understand red blood cells and its function

 Disk shaped, small, flexible, smooth.

 Erythrocytes are commonly referred to as red blood cells or RBCs.

 Consist of Haemoglobin, a protein to primarily carry oxygen to the

body.

 Haemoglobin makes blood look red.

 RBCs do not have a nucleus, do not have a mitochondria.

FUNCTION:

air diffuses into the blood. Once it is in the

blood, the oxygen then diffuses into the red
blood cells.

 Inside the red blood cell, oxygen combines with

haemoglobin. It forms a very bright red
compound called oxyhaemoglobin.

 The blood then moves to the other parts of the

body where the oxyhaemoglobin lets go of its
oxygen and gives it to the cells.

 The blood which has given away most of its

oxygen, now travels back to the lungs to collect
some more.
QUICK REVIEW…

a straw coloured liquid called plasma.
