The Educational Philosophy of
Reconstructionism 
INTRODUCTION
Theodore Brameld, founder of social
reconstructionism, in reaction against
the realities of World War II.

In the 1930s Brameld was drawn to a


social activist group of scholars at
Teachers College, Columbia University
(i.e. Counts, Rugg, Curti, and
Kilpatrick).
What is Reconstructionism?
 centers on the idea of constant change and
emphasizes addressing of social questions.
 a quest to create a better society and worldwide
democracy.
 focuses on a curriculum that highlights social reform
(as the aim of education).
Social-Reconstructionist Education
The philosophy of Social Reconstructionism is a
student- centered philosophy. This philosophy is
rooted in the belief that education should be
focused on reconstructing society. This emphasis
is a result of the perceived lack leadership on the
part of schools to create an equitable society.
