“Foreign Lands” 1
Up into the cherry tree 체리나무 위로
Who should climb but little me? 작은 나 말고 누가 올라갈까?
나는 두 손으로 나무 몸통을 잡고
I held the trunk with both my hands

And looked abroad on foreign lands.

I saw the next door garden lie, 그리고는 멀리 낯선 땅들을 봤지.
나는 옆집에 정원이 펼쳐져 있고,
Adorned with flowers before my eye,
눈앞에 꽃들로 장식된 것과
And many pleasant places more 전에 보지 못했던 많은
That I had never seen before. 즐거운 장소들을 보았지.

나는 잔물결 치는 강이 흘러가며
I saw the dimpling river pass
푸른 하늘의 거울이 되는 것과 ,
And be the sky’s blue looking-glass; 위 아래로 난 먼지 이는 도로로
The dusty roads go up and down 사람들이 시내로 터벅거리며

With people tramping in to town. 가는 것을 보았어 .

내가 더 높은 나무를 찾을 수 있다면
If I could find a higher tree 더 멀리 멀리 볼텐데 ,
Farther and farther I should see, 어른이 된 강이 배들이 있는 바다로

To where the grown-up river slips 미끄러져 들어가는 곳까지 말이야 ,

Into the sea among the ships,

어느 쪽이든 도로가
To where the roads on either hand
동화 나라로 이어지는 곳까지 ,
Lead onward into fairy land, 거기에서는 모든 아이들이
Where all the children dine at five, 5 시에 저녁을 먹고

And all the playthings come alive. 모든 장난감들이 살아나는 곳이지 .

여름의 감미로운 한밤에 ,

In summer’s mellow midnight,
구름 한 점 없는 달이
A cloudless moon shone through 열린 거실 창문으로 비치고
Our open parlor window 장미나무는 이슬에 젖어 있네 .

And rose trees wet with dew.

앉아서 묵상하고 있는데 ,

I sat in silent musing, 부드러운 바람이 내 머리칼을 흔들며
The soft wind waved my hair: 말했다 하늘은 찬란하고 ,

It told me Heaven was glorious, 잠든 대지는 곱다고 .

And sleeping Earth was fair.

나에게 그런 생각을 하게 하는
I needed not its breathing
바람의 숨결 따윈 필요 없었지만 ,
To bring such thoughts to me, 바람이 계속 나직이 속삭였다 ,
But still it whispered lowly, “ 숲이 곧 얼마나 깜깜해질까 !

“How dark the woods will be!

우거진 잎들이 나의 속삭임에

“The thick leaves in my murmur 꿈을 꾸듯이 바스락거리겠지 ,
Are rustling like a dream, 잎들의 무수한 소리에 온통

And all their myriad voices 영혼이 배어 있는 양 .

Instinct* with spirit seem.” * Infused

내가 말했다 , “ 가 , 상냥한 노래꾼 ,

I said, “Go, gentle singer,
네 구애의 소리는 다정하지만 ,
Thy wooing voice is kind, 그 음악이 내 마음에 닿을 만큼
But do not think its music 위력적이라고 생각하지는 마 .

Has power to reach my mind.

향긋한 꽃 , 어린 나무의
“Play with the scented flower,
유연한 가지하고나 놀아 ,
The young tree’s supple bough, 나의 인간 감정들은 그냥
And leave my human feelings 제 갈 길로 흘러가게 두고 .”

In their own course to flow.”

방랑자는 내 말에 아랑곳없이
The wanderer would not leave me;
더욱 따스한 키스를 퍼부었네
Its kiss grew warmer still— “ 오 오렴 ,” 아주 달콤히 살랑대네 ,
“O come,” it sighed so sweetly, “ 네 고집을 꺾어 놓을 거야 .

“I’ll win thee ’gainst thy will.

어릴 적부터 우린 친구였지 않아 ?
“Have we not been from childhood friends? 내가 널 오랫동안 사랑했지 않아 ?
Have I not loved thee long? 네가 밤을 사랑하는 한

As long as thou hast loved the night 그 밤의 침묵은 내 노래를 깨우고 .

Whose silence wakes my song.

그리고 너의 마음이 누워서 쉴 무렵이면

“And when thy heart is laid at rest
교회묘지 비석 아래에
Beneath the church-yard stone 나는 애도할 시간이 충분할거야
I shall have time enough to mourn 너는 혼자 있을 시간이 충분할 거고 .”

And thou to be alone.”

 Pie-Crust:
“Promises are like pie-crust
made to be broken.”

나에게 아무런 약속도 하지 말아요 ,

Promise me no promises,
나도 당신에게 약속하지 않을 거예요 ;
So will I not promise you;
우리 둘 다 우리의 자유를 가져요 ,
Keep we both our liberties,
거짓되지도 진실하지도 말고 :
Never false and never true:
들고 있는 주사위를 던지지 말아요 ,
Let us hold the die uncast,
자유롭게 오듯이 자유롭게 떠나요 ;
Free to come as free to go;
왜냐하면 나는 당신의 과거를 알 수 없고
For I cannot know your past,
그리고 당신도 내 과거를 어찌 알 수
And of mine what can you know?
있겠어요 ?

You, so warm, may once have been 당신은 , 너무 따뜻한 사람인데 ,

Warmer towards another one; 아마도 예전에 다른 이에게는

더 따뜻했을지도 모르죠 ;

I, so cold, may once have seen 전 , 아주 차가운 사람인데 ,

Sunlight, once have felt the sun: 아마도 예전에 햇빛을 보았고

그 태양을 느꼈겠지요 ;

Who shall show us if it was 누가 우리에게 보여줄까요

Thus indeed in time of old? 예전에 정말 그랬는지 ?

Fades the image from the glass 예언자의 구슬에 보이는 모습은 흐리고

And the fortune is not told. 운명을 말해주지 않는데 .

If you promised, you might grieve 당신이 약속한다면 , 당신은 슬퍼하게 돼요

For lost liberty again; 다시 자유를 잃게 되니까요 ;

If I promised, I believe 내가 약속을 한다면 , 나는 믿어요

I should fret to break the chain: 내가 그 사슬을 끓으려 안달할 것을

Let us be the friends we were, 예전처럼 친구로 지내요 ,

Nothing more but nothing less; 그 이상도 그 이하도 말고요 ;

Many thrive on frugal fare 많은 사람이 적게 가지고도 번창하고

Who would perish of excess. 과도하게 가져서 망한답니다 .

오늘 웃는 꽃도
The flower that smiles today 내일이면 지는 것을 ;
Tomorrow dies;
우리가 붙잡고자 하는 모든 것이
All that we wish to stay,
유혹하고는 이내 떠나가네 .
Tempts and then flies.
What is this world’s delight? 이 세상의 기쁨은 무엇일까 ?
밤을 비웃는 번개도
Lightning that mocks the night,
밝지만 매우 짧다네 .
Brief even as bright.

덕이란 , 얼마나 약한지 !

Virtue, how frail it is! 우정이란 얼마나 드문지 !
Friendship how rare!
사랑은 , 얼마나 그 빈약한 축복을
Love, how it sells poor bliss
거만한 절망과 바꾸던가 !
For proud despair!
But we, though soon they fall, 하지만 우리는 , 그것들이 곧 사라져도 ,
그것들의 즐거움과 우리가
Survive their joy and all
우리의 것이라고 부르는 모든 것보다
Which ours we call. 더 오래 산다네 .

하늘이 푸르고 밝은 동안에 ,

Whilst skies are blue and bright, 꽃들이 화사하게 피어 있을 동안에 ,
Whilst flowers are gay,
밤이 되기 전에 변하는 눈들이
Whilst eyes that change ere night
하루를 기쁘게 하는 동안에 ,
Make glad the day,
Whilst yet the calm hours creep, 고요한 시간이 아직 기어가는 동안에 ,
그대여 꿈을 꾸라 , 그리고 잠에서
Dream thou—and from thy sleep
깨어나면 그 때 울어라
Then wake to weep
