The principle of operation
Variable inductance transducers works based on change in the magnetic
characteristics of an electrical circuit in response to measure displacement, velocity,
acceleration.

Variable inductance transducers classified to

1- self generating type
2- passive type
Self generating type:
In self generating type: voltage is generated because of the relative motion
between conductor and magnetic field
Types of self generating transducers:
Electromagnetic type, Electro dynamic type & Eddy current type

Passive type:
Variable reluctance transducers
Mutual inductance transducers
self generating types
Electromagnetic type:
Its consists of permanent magnet core with wounded coil and ferromagnetic
material. When ferromagnetic material is in motion, voltage generates in the coil
due to electromagnetic induction. It helps to indicate angular speed.

N: number of turns
A: area
ϻ: permeability of the medium
l: length of the coil
Electrodynamic type:
The coil moves with in the field of magnet and the turns of the coil are
perpendicular to the intersecting lines of force
When the coil moves it induces the voltages which is proportional to the velocity
of the coil.
Magnetic flow meter used the same principle of operation
Eddy current type:
Shaft rotates a permanent magnet, this induces eddy current in the disc
The eddy current produces torque which rotates the cup against the torque of a
spring
A pointer attached to the cup indicates the rotational speed on a calibrated scale
Eddy current type can measure the speed till 12000 rpm
Eddy current type used in automobile speedmeter
Passive types
Variable reluctance transducers:
In these transducers change in reluctance of magnetic circuit by a mechanical
input results change in inductance and inductive reactance of the coil.
The change in inductance proportional to change in mechanical input
Variable reluctance transducers used to measure pressure, force, displacement
and acceleration.
Mutual inductance transducers:
It consists of an energizing coil X and pick up coil Y.
A change in position of armature leads input changes in the air gap which results
changes in output coil Y.
Mutual inductance transducers used to measure displacement
