What is TOEFL?
• The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized
academic English test primarily taken by students applying to universities in
the United States.
• The TOEFL is also accepted as proof of English ability by some universities
outside the United States.
• The company that administers the TOEF is Educational Testing Service
(ETS).
Kinds of TOEFL
• TOEFL Essentials: an adaptive 1.5 hour online English test of reading,
listening, speaking, and writing, in both a general and an academic context
• TOEFL iBT: a 3 hour English test that tests reading comprehension, listening
comprehension, speaking, and writing, all in an academic context
• TOEFL ITP: measure students' proficiency level in three different skills
(reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and structure and written
expression)which takes 1 hour 55 minutes
TOEFL iBT
• Consists of four sections:
• - Reading (3 academic reading passages, each with 10 multiple choice
questions)
• - Listening (5 listening passages: 3 academic lectures with 6 questions each &
2 campus conversations with 5 questions each)
• - Speaking (4 tasks and you speak your responses into the microphone)
• - Writing (2 essays that you type into the computer/write on the paper,
depending on the testing you chose: at home or at a test center)
Examples
Scoring
• The test takers will receive four scaled section scores and a total score.
• - Each section has a score range of 0–30.
• - These are added together for a total score of 0–120.
Practice
TOEFL ITP
• Available in paper or digital format and comprised of multiple-choice
questions to evaluate skills in Listening Comprehension, Structure and
Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension.
• Consists of: Level 1 and Level 2
• Speaking test (only available with the digital TOEFL ITP Level 1 or Level 2
test)
Purposes
• placement in intensive English-language programs requiring academic English proficiency at a
college or graduate level
• progress monitoring in English-language programs stressing academic English proficiency
• exiting English-language programs by demonstrating proficiency in English listening and reading
• skill building and preparation for the TOEFL iBT® test
• admissions to short-term, nondegree programs and collaborative international degree programs
• admissions to degree programs through testing administered by an institution for use only in that
institution
• admissions to degree programs through pathways specific to an institution
• scholarship programs, as contributing documentation for academic English proficiency
Sections & Scoring
Speaking test
• Evaluates the skills needed to speak English in everyday situations, as well as
some basic campus and academic settings — making it an ideal way for in-
country institutions to measure a students’ capabilities. It consists of one read
aloud task, two independent speaking tasks and one integrated speaking task.
• Testing time: Approximately 15 minutes
• Number of tasks: Four
• Score range: 31–68
