Wind Energy

Background
• Wind energy is the cleanest and oldest
forms of energy to exist through history
• It is this energy which first powered ships
with sails, providing commerce and
communication between countries. Even
today, surfing and sailing are popular
sports utilizing this form of energy.
History
• Trade was facilitated solely by this means before the
invention of engines. We recall that boats using sails and in
turn wind energy is the means by which many groups of
people came to the Caribbean
• In the Caribbean it also dated back to sugar production,
wind mills was used on estates to make sugar specifically to
crush sugar cane. It was one of the most basic forms of
mechanization. Today we can see the remains of many
windmills to prove this.
Uses

• Many countries today use windmills

to generate electricity for pumping
water, operating electrical equipment
and supplying electricity to
households. The blades of the
windmills are connected to a
generator. As the blades rotate, they
drive the shaft of the generator, there
by producing electricity.
Disadvantages

• It depends on the force of wind

which may at times be non-existent.
• To attract a constant supply of wind,
windmills must be strategically
placed, e.g., on highlands which
may result in the destruction of
forests and interfere with the
aesthetic beauty of the locations.
Advantages
• Wind is a renewable resource.
• It is clean
• It is a free resource.
• It does not produce any sort of
environmental pollution such as
nitrogen oxides and sulphur
dioxides which are
characteristic of fossil fuels.

Answers
• A few uses of windmills are for
pumping energy into homes for
domestic uses, recreational purposes
like surfing and sailing and
manufacturing purposes like
channeling energy to power sugar
cane rotators
• Wind energy is not used in Grenada
on a large scale because of high
urbanization rates hence lack of
space, high initial implementation
cost and because we can utilize
solar energy more efficiently.
• The benefits of using wind energy
are, it doesn’t manifest greenhouse
gases, it’s a free resource, it is
renewable, and it is clean and
