Title: Germination

Aim: To observe the germination of a seed for a two week period

Skill assessed: ORR

In your observations, you should :

 Have at least three photos showing the germination process, one of which should shows the
young seedling with a few leaves
 State the condition of the seed before germination i.e the testa splits, the seed appears swollen
Observation:
Before germination, The absorption of water resulted in the softening and swelling of the
seed coat. The seed testa split. The cells of the embryo started to enlarge or swell. Then
the seed coat was broken open and a root or radicle emerges first. The
plumule emerged after. After the emerging of the radicle and plumule, the shoot started
growing upwards.
a
 Which emerges first. State what appears on the radicle tip
 State how the plumule appeared I.e. bent or straight
 State if the cotyledon appeared above or below the ground after germination

In you discussion, state:

 Why the seed appeared swollen

 Why the radicle appear first
 Why the plumule comes out bent
 The purpose of the tiny root hairs
 The role of the cotyledon during germination
 When photosynthesis starts to occur in the young seedling

Conclusion:
