Most Essential Learning Competencies,

(MELC):
 Solve problems involving one -
dimensional motion with constant
acceleration in contexts such as free -
fall problems
 Deduce the consequences of the
independence of vertical and horizontal
components of projectile motion 6

PHYSICS 1 Free - fall

Free falling object is an object that is falling under the

sole influence of gravity. Any object that is being acted
upon only by the force of gravity is said to be in a state of
free fall.

2 important characteristics of free-falling objects:

1. Free-falling objects do not encounter air resistance.
2. All free-falling objects (on Earth) accelerate
downwards at a rate of - 9.8 (often approximated as -
10 for easy calculations).

Two
The resistance of air should be

neglected.
 All objects should fall with the
same rate of acceleration,

GENERAL

PHYSICS 1 Non-Free fall
Non-free fall, air resistance has to be
considered. Air resistance keeps falling objects
from undergoing full acceleration of gravity
because as objects fall and gain speed, the
force of air resistance builds up until it equals
the weight of the falling object, resulting the net
force acting on it becomes zero and the object
stops accelerating.
Imagine the raindrops, without air resistance, they would reach
the ground with a bullet-speed. 9

PHYSICS 1 Projectile Motion

Projectile Motion
-is the motion of an object thrown or
projected into the air, subject to only the
acceleration of gravity.

The object is called a projectile, and its

path is called trajectory.

ACTIVITY # 2-1

You decide to flip a coin to determine whether to do your Physics or

English homework first. The coin is flipped straight up.
a) What is the velocity of the coin at the top of its trajectory?
Explain.
b) If the coin had reached a highest point of 1.25 m above where
you released it, what was its initial speed?
c) If you catch it at the same height as you released it, how much
time did it spent in the air?
(HINT: You may just compute the time for the coin to reach the highest point,
then, double it for its way down).
