Measure the angles and arcs of the circle.

Theorems on Angles Formed

by Tangents and Secants
GRADE 10-MATH
Secants – A straight line that intersects a circle in two
points is called a secant line.

Tangents – A tangent to a circle is a straight line

that touches the circle at one point, which called the
point of tangency.
Case #1. Vertex is OUTSIDE the circle.
The Intersecting Secants-Exterior Theorem
The measure of an angle formed by two secants
intersecting in the exterior of the circle is one-half the
difference of its intercepted arcs.

Angle =
Example #1. Use the given value to find m∠A.

mA =

mA = 50o

Example #2. Find mAB

mU =
27o =
54o = 70o – mAB
mAB = 70o-54o
mAB = 16o

Example #3. Find the mEL.

Angle A=
36 =
2 (36) = 100-mEL
72 = 100-mEL
mEL=100-72
mEL=28o
Case #2. Vertex is On the circle.
The Tangent Point-Secant Theorem
The measure of an angle formed by a tangent
and a secant drawn at the point of tangency is one-
half the measure of its intercepted arc.

m∠ABC =
Example #4. Find m1

m1 =
m1 = 135o
Example #5. Find m2

m=
m = 42o
Example #6. Find m∠3

m3 =
m3 = 42o
Case #3. Vertex is INSIDE the circle.
The Intersecting Secant-Interior Theorem
The measure of an angle formed by two secants
intersecting in the interior of the circle is equal to
one-half the sum of the measures of its intercepted
arc.

m∠BPD =
Example #7. Find the value of x.

x=
=
=
x = 60o
Example #8. Find mQT

92o =
184=84+mQT
184-84 = mQT
100o = mQT
