and to effectors (muscles and glands) which control their
activity

Label the Following:
 Striations
 Nucleus
 Muscle fiber (cell)
SKELETAL MUSCLE TISSUE
Function:

Manipulation of the environment
Facial expression
Voluntary control
Location:
In skeletal muscles attached to bones or occasionally to skin
SMOOTH MUSCLE TISSUE

Tissue: Smooth Muscle
Label the Following:

SMOOTH MUSCLE TISSUE.
Function:
Propels substances or objects (foodstuffs, urine, a baby) along
internal passageways; involuntary control
Location:
Mostly in the walls of hollow organs
CARDIAC MUSCLE TISSUE

Function:
As it contracts, it propels blood into circulation; involuntary

Function:
Transport respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, and other

Tissue: Stratified squamous epithelium

STR. SQUAMOUS.
Function:
Protects underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion
Location:
Non-keratinized type forms the moist linings of the
esophagus, mouth, and vagina
Keratinized variety forms the epidermis of the skin, a dry
membrane
ADIPOSE TISSUE

Tissue: Adipose connective tissue (loose CT)
Label the Following:
 Fat droplet

Function:
Provides reserve food fuel
Insulates against heat loss
Supports and protects organs

Plays an important role in inflammation

Tissue: Transitional epithelium

Function:
Stretches readily, permits stored urine to distend urinary
organ
Location:
Lines the ureters, bladder, and part of the urethra
RETICULAR CT

Tissue: Reticular connective tissue (loose CT)

RETICULAR CT.
Function:
Fibers form a soft internal skeleton (stroma) that supports
other cell types including white blood cells, mast cells, and
macrophages

Tissue: Simple cuboidal epithelium

Tissue: Psuedostratified ciliated columnar epithelium

PSEUDOSTRATIFIED COLUMNAR.
Function:
Secrete substances , particularly mucus
Propulsion of mucus by ciliary action
Location:
Lines the trachea, most of the upper respiratory tract
BONE (OSSEOUS)

Tissue: Compact bone (Osseous Tissue) CT
Label the Following:
 Osteon – structural unit of compact bone
 Central canal
 Osteocyte in lacunae
 Lamella
 Canaliculi
BONE (OSSEOUS).
Function:
Supports and protects (by enclosing)
Provides levers for the muscles to act on
Stores calcium and other minerals and fat
Marrow inside bones is the site for blood cell formation
(hematopoiesis)

Tissue: Simple columnar epithelium

Secretion of mucus and enzyme, and other substances
Location:
Lines most of the digestive tract (stomach and rectum),
gallbladder, and excretory ducts of some glands
HYALINE CARTILAGE

Tissue: Hyaline Cartilage (CT)
Label the Following:

HYALINE CARTILAGE.
Function:
Supports and reinforces
Serves as a resilient cushion
Resists compressive stress
Location:
Forms most of the embryonic skeleton
Covers the ends of long bones in joint cavities
Forms costal cartilages of the ribs
Cartilages of the nose, trachea, and larynx
ELASTIC CARTILAGE

Maintains the shape of a structure while allowing great
flexibility
