Role of Assessment in Teaching and Learning:

• To assess whether effective learning has taken place


• To monitor students’ understanding
• To inform the teacher about the next step (move forward or remedial
action needed)
• To help students progress through the Curriculum (NCF)

Assessment should therefore be:


• Continuous, varied, and authentic
• Largely formative
• Objective, valid, fair, and challenging
• Sensitive to differences in students’ abilities and needs
• Transparent with clear expectations and assessment criteria (ref: NCF)
