Mechanics
• The class will be grouped according to the color of their name tags. Each
group will be given a worksheet to answer. Each group is tasked to pick out
the words that are used to connect ideas in the text. Five minutes is the
allotted time for group preparation. When the group is done, it must make a
yell, post its outputs on the board and the presentations will follow. Before
the presentation, the group must give introduction of what they are going to
do in front of the class. Feed backs will be given right after the discussion.
 Each group will assign the following roles in a minute.
Leader One who leads the group

Secretary One who writes the answers of the group

Reporter One who reports the output to the class

Timekeeper One who monitors the time

(cohesive devices)
There are three main types of cohesive devices:

1. Pronouns that refer to a previously mentioned noun.


Example: Jim went out to the playground. He played on the swings.
2. Substitution of a synonym for a previously mentioned noun.
Example: There was a lot of food, but she only ate bread.
3. Transition words and inter-clausal connectors such as so or because
Example: Jim played on the swings. Later, Jim played ball.
Mary was late, so she took the bus.
Mary was late because she took the bus.
The following cohesive devices are commonly used in sentences:

▪ For sequencing of ideas: First, second, next, then, after, lastly, as a result
▪ For contrasting ideas: in comparison, in contrast, instead, on the

In a ½ sheet of paper combine the sentences below using correct cohesive
devices. You have five minutes to answer.
Using the same groupings you will be assigned to different task and what you are
going to do is to accomplish the given activities for 5 minutes.
Group 1- Make a comic strip that shows the use of appropriate cohesive devices.
Group 2- Write a short script that would show the importance of using, and effect
of not using cohesive devices.
Group 3- Write a short paragraph comparing the two images.

Group 4- Make a recipe procedure that shows the use of appropriate cohesive
devices.
