Definition Examples

1. Interpretation of verbal sings by means

Definition

Example: An example of Interlingual Translation
would be the Bible. Assumed to be originally written
in Hebrew, the Bible also underwent numerous
translations into the Greek and Latin and then to into
English.
“Since no two languages are identical, either in the
meanings given to corresponding symbols or in the
ways in which such symbols are arranged in phrases
and sentences, it stands to reason that there can be no
absolute correspondence between languages. Hence,
there can be no fully exact translations” Eugene Nida (a
modern linguist).
Some consideration
 The translator should try to find the best equivalents in the target language.
Example: Imagine you have to translate the word “yes” into French, German and Italian:
French: oui, si
German: ja In French si is used only in cases of contradiction or dissent.
Italian: sì
 Sometimes polysemy can also cause some difficulties for translators.
Polysemic word  word that has more than one meaning.
Example : The word “table” (as a noun) has these meanings:
1. a piece of furniture that consists of a flat top supported by legs
2. the people sitting at a table for a meal or to play cards, etc.
3. a list of facts or numbers arranged in a special order, usually in rows and columns
4. a list of sport teams, countries, schools, etc. that shows their position in a competition, etc.
 The translator should pay attention to the context and determine which of these meanings is
used in the source language
