Exalting the

Gospel of Christ
Romans 1:1-17
Romans 1
1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the
gospel of God,
2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,
3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of
David according to the flesh;
laman,
4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of
holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
Romans 1
5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for
obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
bansa, dahil sa kaniyang pangalan;
6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:
7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord
Jesus Christ.
Romans 1
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken
of throughout the whole world.
9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son,
that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; 9
10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous
journey by the will of God to come unto you.
11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the
end ye may be established; 11 Sapagka't ninanasa kong makita kayo, upang
mangagsitibay;
Romans 1
12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual
faith both of you and me. 12 Sa makatuwid baga, upang ako't kayo ay
13 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I
purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have
some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. 13 At
14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the
wise, and to the unwise.
mangmang.
Romans 1
15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that
are at Rome also.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of
God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also
to the Greek.
17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith:
as it is written, The just shall live by faith.17 Sapagka't dito ang

I. Servants of Jesus Christ
There were several ancient Greek words used to designate a slave, but the idea behind the word for
servant (doulos) is “complete and utter devotion, not the abjectness which was the normal condition
of the slave.” (Morris)

Introduction of Paul: Who is Paul?

A Servant of Jesus Christ (Vs 1a)
An Apostle (Vs 1b)
A Preacher of the Gospel (Vs 1-4)
A Missionary to the Gentiles (Vs 5-7)

1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
a. Heard the Gospel and Regenerated by the Holy Spirit
i. Ye Must be born Again! (John 3:5)
ii. Ears that Heard the Gospel, Hearts that believed (Rom 10:8-10, 13-17)
I. Servants of Jesus Christ
b. Saw His sinfulness and God’s Holiness
i. Ex. Isaiah in Isaiah 6 (Seeing the Seraphims Crying Thrice Holy, and self to be accursed,
destroyed, disintegrated or WOE.)
ii. To Be Poor in Spirit (Knowing that you are in Need of God)
c. Repent and Believe
Mark 1 (After Christ’s Baptism)
12And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
13And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and
the angels ministered unto him.
14Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the
kingdom of God,
15And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the
gospel.

The Preacher’s assertion is that this is a direct reference to Isaiah 53 where the promised Servant of Jehovah, the Messiah
who bore our sins and transgression and paid it in the Hands of the Wrath of God which have been satisfied by the Blood
of Christ.
Isaiah 53
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid
as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted.
4 Tunay na kaniyang dinala ang ating mga karamdaman, at dinala ang ating mga kapanglawan;
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the
chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD
hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53
10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief:
when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his
seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall
prosper in his hand.
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by
his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall
bear their iniquities.

Rome as the emperor’s prisoner to be tried before Caesar. When Paul wrote this letter, he had no idea
that he would go through imprisonment and even shipwreck before arriving in Rome! At the close of the

III. Sharing the Gospel of Christ
A. The Origin of the Gospel - Christ (Vs. 16)
1. Rom 1:1
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
2. Rom 1:9
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make
mention of you always in my prayers;
3. Rom 1:15
So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.
4. Rom 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that
believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

The Gospel is about Christ; His perfect sinless life, His Divinity and Perfect Humanity, His Death, Burial, Resurrection and
Ascension, His Mediation Between God and Man, and the Gospel is for Christ’s Glory!
Hebrews 12:2, Matthew 28:18, 1 Timothy 6:14-15
Christ endured the Cross, Despising the Shame, Christ is Seated on His Throne above! He has all the power both in heaven
and in earth, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, the Alpha and Omega of our Faith.
III. Sharing the Gospel of Christ
B. The Operation of the Gospel - The Power of God (Vs. 16)
- “Power is the one thing that Rome boasted of the most. Greece might have its philosophy, but Rome had its
power” (Wiersbe). Despite all their power, the Romans – like all men – were powerless to make themselves
righteous before God. The ancient philosopher Seneca called Rome “a cesspool of iniquity” and the ancient
writer Juvenal called it a “filthy sewer into which the dregs of the empire flood.” (Enduring Word)

C. The Outcome of the Gospel - Salvation (Vs. 16)

1. Righteousness
a) William Barclay explains the meaning of this ancient Greek word dikaioo, which means I justify, and is
the root of dikaioun (righteousness): “All verbs in Greek which end in oo… always mean to treat, or
account or reckon a person as something. If God justifies a sinner, it does not mean that he finds
reasons to prove that he was right – far from it. It does not even mean, at this point, that he makes the
sinner a good man. It means that God treats the sinner as if he had not been a sinner at all.”
b) Salvation “Deliverance” Only Christ can deliver a sinful man from going to the depths of Hell.
III. Sharing the Gospel of Christ
D. The Outreach of the Gospel - To everyone that believeth (Vs. 16-17)
1. Just Shall Live by Faith - A sinner is Justified by the blood of Christ whose sins are
paid in Full which brings forth Faith as he lives! Truly we are now living by Faith!
2. Faith to Faith
a) The idea behind this difficult phrase is probably “by faith from beginning to end.”
b) “Perhaps what it conveys is the necessity of issuing a reminder to the believer that
justifying faith is only the beginning of the Christian’s life. The same attitude must
govern him in his continuing experience as a child of God.” (Harrison) This is an
echo of Paul’s message in Galatians 3:1-3.
Conclusion
The Gospel is so Pure and Holy that those who will only be able to be enabled to utter truthfully are those
that God hath saved and made Holy through Jesus Christ.

The Gospel of Christ is so mysterious to the unbelievers that you will only understand it by Faith from
Christ so you can be saved by God’s Grace and Declare the Truths of Christ.

The Gospel of Christ is a Miracle of God and a Manifestation of His Sovereign Power and Will, therefore
our Salvation is humanly impossible without the mediation of a Divine being which is none other than the
God-Man Jesus Christ.

God is Light and Without the Enlightenment of the Holy Spirit to the Word of God that same Light will be
the judgment of the unbelieving people as they’ll experience everlasting darkness exposed by the Light
unto the fiery wrath of God.

Now that you’re saved God’s work in us is not done the Holy Spirit Sanctifies the saved, and those who are
truly saved will be able to Share the Gospel of Christ as you’ve also received it.
