Gerunds as subject in a sentence


When a gerund is used as the subject of a sentence, it refers to an action or process. It takes the
place of a noun in the subject position and is followed by a verb.

Examples: Subject + V + C
Jogging is good for your health.

Reading helps to improve vocabulary.

Cooking can be a creative outlet.

In these examples, "jogging“, "reading" and "cooking" are gerunds that act as subjects. They represent
actions that are the focus of the sentences.
Gerunds as object in a sentence
A gerund can also function as an object in a sentence. In this case, it follows a verb or a
preposition and represents the action receiving the effect of the verb or the object of the
preposition.

Examples: S+V+O

I enjoy swimming in the ocean.

She loved learning French.

They talked about traveling to Europe next year.

In these examples, "swimming”, "learning”, and "traveling" are gerunds that function as objects.
They follow verbs or prepositions (to, about, with, for, Etc.)
